altersteve Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 I have always thought that these verses completely refute the idea of the Father and the Son being one in substance, but Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians don't see it.
ldsfaqs Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 (edited) I would note that the "original" Trinity didn't say they were "one in substance", only that they were of the "same substance" because Christ was the Fathers "only begotten".Only later did the Trinity change into becoming the "same substance", i.e. thing, it, being, essence, whatever mystery.Oh, and as to the OP of why the verses, the reason is because the verses make very "clear" how the Father and Christ are "One", and it's the same way we are to be one with Christ and also the Father.They and we are not "one in substance".
