Great Lightning Show Put On By Volcano In Puyehue Chile

So I've watched the "The New World" Neal A. Maxwell Institute DVD and I have never seen very good pictures of what they were referring to when they spoke of lightning balls of electricity that would have been present during the destruction of 3 Nephi. So here's a slideshow of few good pictures of what this type of lightning may have looked like. It comes from a recent volcano that just took place on June 5th in Puyehue Cordon Caulle Chile. If I remember right in the DVD they only had a painting of some sort. Here is the link to the picture gallery via yahoo.

I find these pictures extremely interesting, but on a side note, Rod Meldrum compares these 3 Nephi destructions to earthquake of 1811-1812 in Missouri, Kentucky area. Apparently there are some very interesting correlations. He has a 28 point checklist. I still feel that the setting in Mesoamerica with its ring on volcanoes and multiple meeting points for plate techtonics has a better chance of being the place for these types of destruction.

I am in the process of producing a short video presentation on 3 Nephi that outlines a number of natural disasters that can be pointed out from the text. It isn't at all uncommon for volcanic clouds to produce their own weather patterns. Not long ago I had the chance to chat with a man who was not a Latter-day Saint but who was in the Philippines during the Pinatubo eruption. He recounted the fact that the ash was so thick that their flashlights essentially became useless, so they tried using signal flares, which were doused almost immediately by the falling ash.

While the New Madrid fault line has produced the largest earthquakes in the lower 48 (bigger than anything on the San Andreas), I would be interested in learning exactly what 28 points Meldrum is referring to. I would also like to know which part of Illinois he says fell into the sea. The consensus of Latter-day Saint geologists in which I have spoken with suggests that Mesoamerica is likely the only place for such a diversity of destructive forces to have occurred. If you have access to Google Earth, there are many more volcanoes, fault scarps, and potential coastal hazards than the following illustration permits (due to space constraints).
