Hughes: I'm confused. Things are taught in the LDS church, which are not accepted doctrine?

Elf: The lectures on faith are not taught in the church. They may have been at one point, but they are not taught today.

I would add, Sunday School classes in the LDS Church are taught from manual produced by the LDS Church, what is found in those manuals would be the teachings of the LDS Church.

In the LDS Church the meeting which is like unto Catholic Mass, after the sacrament part, a person will speak on what ever subject they have previous been asked to speak on; this person will most likely be a "lay" member with no authority to speak on the behalf of the LDS Church. Do people sometimes share, during their oration/pontification, information which is not from Official LDS Church published materials, yes they do.

So to answer the question, The LDS Church as an Organization does not teach things which are not considered "doctrine".

I had a teacher as a teenager who taught us that hypnosis is direct communication with our spirit. Maybe so, maybe not. Don't think that was in the manual, though.

Seems to me that it might get confusing. If a person were to speak/teach about something not in official LDS church published materials, while during the sacrament meeting (which is where the other thread's original poster said it was).

To answer the question in the OP, not everything taught in church is doctrine. It is silly to think that.

I would say that most things are doctrine and that majority of the stuff that is taught that is not dcotrine is not really that pertinant to this life.

THings like "Did Adam have a belly button?" Or "Did God have a Father?"

It sure would be nice to know all of these things. But really it just does not matter.

I generally look at things and put them into 2 categories. THings you need to know and things that would be nice to know.

I think we know all or almost all of hte the things you need to know in this life. I think we know a few things that are nice to know.

IF some one teaches something out of a manual that is not offically published by the church how is that confusing to think that is not church doctrine?

Most books that are not offically published tell us at the very biginning of the book that it is the author's opinion and does not represent the offical doctrine of the church.

How is that confusing?

IOW not offical does not equal offical doctrine?

Why would not offical= church doctrine?
