There actually were special cases of priesthood authority. What there wasn't was operative priesthood keys for the administration of the Church among mortal man.Accidental double post...edit: I did read a quote by Elder Maxwell (I think) who said the priesthood never left the earth. And I don't think he was talking about John or 3 Nephites. I'll see if I can find it but no promises. It's been a while.

The special cases you may be referring to were situations operating thorough their own keys.you have a good point. had my critical thinking hat been honed a bit more sharply I should have recognized that loss of authority does not necessarily equal total loss of authority.
