volgadon Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 One of the most frequent arguments against the church by evangelicals is that the heart is deceitful, feelings can't be trusted, must reason, bla bla bla....Here is what Geza Vermes, in his book The Authentic Gospel of Jesus has to say about the heart. To understand the proverb 'Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks' (Luke 6:45), it must be remembered that the heart in Semitic mentality is the symbolic seat of thinking rather than that of feeling. A rabbinic saying in Aramaic distinguishes someone who keeps in his heart what is in his heart from those who transfer their heart's secrets to their mouth and thus divulge them (Genesis Rabbah 84:9). So 'Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks' recalls the image of the good heart filled with righteous ideas and contrasts it with the bad heart crammed with wicked thoughts.Looks like those verses they always quote actually condemn their position. Not the first time that has happened either.
Deborah Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 It fits rather well with D&C 8:2 "Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart."
handys003 Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I really can't get into this heart stuff. I tend IMO that the souls dwells in the mind (brain) and acts accordingly and has nothing to do with the heart. The soul (human consciousness) governs the feelings.

Most of christianity is still stuck in this Neoplatonism. Joseph Smith taught a way out of the quandry - and like anyone who preaches something out of line with what is politically powerful (no matter the absurdity of the popular political position) he was/is condemed by the so-called religionists mired in Neoplatonism.Respectfully,Mark Hannig

Fly Fisherman Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 I refuse to believe that almost all religious people, and particularly Christians, don't believe and act on their religion based on the heart. Granted, an intellectual understanding is good and necessary, but most of us Christians, including those outside of Mormonism, act and believe mainly because of what is in our heart.

It makes reason stare.
