Mortal Man Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 http://www.mormonapo...blown-my-cover/It was an attempt at a joke, sorry. That was bishopric meeting not PEC, and I'd characterize that particular incident as more of an indiscretion than a gaffe. Now, if you want to discuss my bishopric meeting atrocities, that is a whole new can of worms.
structurecop Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 That was bishopric meeting not PEC, and I'd characterize that particular incident as more of an indiscretion than a gaffe.Yes, "gaffe" was a little strong. "Slip" might be a more appropriate description. Now, if you want to discuss my bishopric meeting atrocities, that is a whole new can of worms. For some reason, nothing amuses me as much as awkward moments in Church meetings.
Pappy Fiddle Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I also said that we have every reason to believe we do not have the full text of the Book of Abraham because, whereas facsimiles one and two appear to be referenced to some degree in the text, there is no mention of facsimile three in the text; and in fact, the book ends before Abraham even makes it to Egypt. (Also mentioned the missing Book of Joseph.)I was nodding, nodding at this... yep, that's right... sort of nodding off even...(I had everybody open to the facsimile, and then turn it sideways so they could see what the actual heiroglyph looked like right-side up; I started awake. What? What heiroglyph? For there were heiroglyphs on the papyrus source for Fac. 1, which didn't make it into the published facsimile. And I have wandered far and searched long but found none who could tell me the meaning thereof. What heiroglyph could the brethren see? I see none there.I may have embellished a wee bit when I said that when we look at this, it just looks odd, but any Egyptian looking at it would see right away that the figure on the altar is praying.)Turning it ninety degrees, I now see! Abraham, as he was strung up by his heels. He looks to me more like he's saying "Oh, goodness." All the canopic jars are about to slide into the sea, like chess pieces after the game is over, the priest is hollerin' "Hey, dude!" as he begins to surf down the slope, and the Lion is singing "right-CHUS, right-CHUS!!" as he hangs twenty. Even the alligator is engaged, and the bird flutters out of the way in fright. I tell you, you've breached the wall into a new dimension of scripture study here.PappyTo the audience: "I kill you! ... I kill you!" (to his puppeteer: "I make small joke... I'm killing them") -Achmed the Dead Terrorist
Pappy Fiddle Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Looks like the board software's gone on the blink again, needs looking at (again)Oh, OK, I had my quotes reversed... never mind
consiglieri Posted November 12, 2009 Author Posted November 12, 2009 It is just possible you turned the facsimile 90 degrees in the wrong direction. But very funny! All the Best!--Consiglieri

consiglieri Posted November 12, 2009 Author Posted November 12, 2009 It should be noted that the slaying of the priest of Pharoah in lieu of Abraham is a good example of "talionic" punishment, where the punishment suffered by the priest in reversal of what he had done is exactly the kind of "balanced" or "retaliating" punishment that epitomizes justice in the ancient Near East and under the law of Moses. The choice of words used to first represent the priest and what he is doing, and then used immediately thereafter to describe Abraham and what he does, serves to emphasize the "balancing" going on in what appears to be a classic instance and iteration of talionic justice. It almost sounds like the author knew what he was doing when he wrote this. All the Best!--Consiglieri
