What did the Egyptians call these figures?

Imseti, Hapi, Duamutef, Qebehsenuef (ỉmstỉ, ḥpy, dwɜ-mw.t=f, ḳbḥ-sn.w=f)(1).

What are these Sons of Horus?

"The human-headed Imsety guarded the liver and was associated with the goddess Isis. Hapy, who is depicted with the head of a baboon, protected the lungs and was himself protected by Nephtys. The jackal-headed Duamutef, who was associated with the goddess Neith, guarded the stomach. The hawk-headed Qebesenuef protected the intestines and was guarded by Selket. Each deity also represented one of the cardinal points of the compass: Imsety the South, Hapy the North, Duamutef the East, and Qebesenuef the West"(2).

What did the Prophet Joseph Smith say these figures represent?

Represents this earth in its four quarters.

And precisely what does this have to do with Prop 8? :P

Seriously though, kewl stuff. ;)

Once again, another lucky guess on Joseph Smith's part. Anyone from the early 19th century American wilderness with a third grade education could have guessed this sort of thing.....

:P

Oh, was my sarcasm that evident?

How were the Nephtys involved in this?

and where are the Lamontys?

Actually, you may not be that far off. Nibley believed that the name "Nephi" was of egyptian origin (Sam too):

Nephi (BM), founder of the Nephite nation.

Nehi, Nehri (OW), famous Egyptian noblemen. Nfy was the name of an Egyptian captain. Since BM insists on "ph," Nephi is closer to Nihpi, original name of the god Pa-nepi, which may even have been Nephi.

Mind you, just because the 4 Sons of Horus are associated with the 4 cardinal points in other contexts that doesnt mean that this is what was intended when Sheshonq's hypocephalus was created. Since hypocephali post date father Abraham by hundreds and hundreds of years, I think they were adopted by the ancient egyptian owners of the BoA because there was enough parrallelism to what was being discussed in sections of the BoA we currently lack so as to adopt the hypocephalus, and the vignettes for that matter, as helpful aids in understanding the BoA, a book which is not of egyptian origin. In other words, I prefer E-red to J-red.
