Fig. 1. Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh.

The Sun as Primeval Creator God seated in the center of the hypo. He is holding the wes scepter, a symbol of power and dominion. Near his top right is the hierogliphic representation of the Nun, the primeval waters which he came from during the first creation. In other hypo's he has 4 heads, representing the first four generations of creation.

Fig 3: Fig. 3. Is made to represent God, sitting upon his throne, clothed with power and authority; with a crown of eternal light upon his head; representing also the grand Key-words of the Holy Priesthood, as revealed to Adam in the Garden of Eden, as also to Seth, Noah, Melchizedek, Abraham, and all to whom the Priesthood was revealed.

This is Re, sun god and creator. In Leiden papyrus 383, Jehovah and Abraham are associated with the "four fold creator", the "fury of Re".

Fig 22, 23. the stars receiving light from the revolutions of Kolob

These apes are recieving the warmth of the sun's rays as it rises in the morning. Apes were associated with the god Thoth and has solar and lunar connections. Apes were also connected with the Hapy, a son of Horus and himself a baboon. Hapy also functioned as a star god and was a five pointed stellar constellation.

Fig. 5. Is called in Egyptian Enish-go-on-dosh; this is one of the governing planets also, and is said by the Egyptians to be the Sun, and to borrow its light from Kolob through the medium of Kae-e-vanrash, which is the grand Key, or, in other words, the governing power, which governs fifteen other fixed planets or stars, as also Floeese or the Moon, the Earth and the Sun in their annual revolutions. This planet receives its power through the medium of Kli-flos-is-es, or Hah-ko-kau-beam, the stars represented by numbers 22 and 23, receiving light from the revolutions of Kolob.

The cow here is Hathor, wearing the two plumed sun between her horns. She is the the sky. She gives birth to the sun and puts him on her horns, placing him above. Among other things, the sun was also considered the literal eye ball of Re thus recieving the title "Eye of Re". Curiosly, the BoD also calls the Hathor Cow "Eye of Re".

Eye of Re=sun

Eye of Re=hathor cow

Fig. 6. Represents this earth in its four quarters.

The four Sons of Horus: Imsety, Hapy, Qebesenuaf and Duamutef. Among other things, these were the gods of the four cardinal points: Imsety was associated with the South, Hapy with the North, Duamutef with the East and Qebesenuaf with the West. In order to divide something in four quarters you need 4 points from which to cut from the north to the south, from the east to the west. Simple geometry to say the least.

Fig. 7. Represents God sitting upon his throne, revealing through the heavens the grand Key-words of the Priesthood; as, also, the sign of the Holy Ghost unto Abraham, in the form of a dove.

The Min, ictyphalic with upraised arm in authority was a predynastic god. In the earliest times he was a sky-god called the "Chief of Heaven". He was the "Great Male, the owner of all females.

The Bull who is unites with those of the sweet love, of beautiful face and of painted eyes,

Victorious sovereign among the Gods who inspires fear in the Ennead." The goddesses are glad, seeing his perfection. This fits well with the Mysteries of Godliness as revealed by Joseph Smith and his earliest successors.

Fig. 4. Prince of Pharaoh, King of Egypt, as written above the hand.

Can Maat be the name of Prince of Pharoah, King of Egypt? Could a female divinity be Prince of Pharoah, King of Egypt? ? Ramses the 2nd, King of Egypt was. As Pharoah, one of his throne names was Woser-Maat-Ra. During one particular rite, the Pharoah presented the gods with a little statute of Maat. This statute was also a rebus of the king's name it a held a Woser staff and wore a sun disk on its head, along with the Maat feather. It can be said that in this doll was both Maat and Woser-Maat-Ra(Ramses 2). So, during one ritual event Maat was Pharoah the King of Egypt, Pharoah the King of EGypt was Maat. Though still recquiring a "leap of faith", Joseph's interpretation does not recquire that great of a leap and can be considered possible.

Here's one you can really sink your teeth into. If anyone wants a good scan (from the 1879 edition of the PoGP) of the facsimiles, PM me. I can give them to you as big as you'd like at 300dpi or 600dpi.

This one is about 1280 pixels square: Facsimile 2

I am interested, I just am not a scholar and don't understand what you are saying. If you would give us a little synopsis, or your ideas about it, it would help. Thanks.

Im not a scholar either. What I have done is provide commentary on the egyptian context of these symbols on an individual basis. Now, I also attempt to highlight the possible connections and or parallels with the Prophet's interpretation.

Now, Im not trying to 'prove" that Joseph was a a Prophet. But, on the links I provide, I have quoted actual egyptologsts and tried to keep my exegesis to a minimum. These quotes make no reference to Joseph Smith, thus lessening the bias factor. I also have a blurb or two from Kerry Shirts(fig 1), and a few online sites(fig 7).

I think mormon and non-mormon crituqes of the Prophet's interpretations are lacking, especially this one :P . That is why on most of the threads I used eygptological interpretations that make no reference to the BoA. Why? Because mo's and non mo's have a tendancy to leave stuff out.

Here is an example of an anti-take on the fac 2.

http://zarahemlacitylimits.com/essays/Morm...aham/BOA_7.html

I have not touched figures 2 and 4. Excepting 2 and 4, which do you think is more informative? My threads or his/her paper? No funerary context for the sons of horus as 4 cardinal points? Wrong!! No, duh fig 5 is the Hathor Cow, but what is she in the Book of the Dead? Figure 7 is Min, but is that compatible with the mormon concept of God? Fig 3 is Re, but does Re have anything to do with Jehovah, even if just an isolated case of greco-roman period syncrytism? Anti's , with or without a PHD, never dig deeper for to do so is to take Joseph seriosly and countanance the idea that he actually translated correctly.

Forexample, when reffering to figure 4 of fac 3:

Again, Joseph got the gender wrong. This is a woman, not a man, and she is the goddess Maat, goddess of justice â?? identified by the feather on her head and the writing above her hand. She is leading the deceased (figure 5) into the presence of Osiris. The text above Maat reads: "Maat, mistress of the gods."

no one is denying that the figure is Maat. But is anyone else wierded out by the fact that despite Maat's obviosly feminine long hair and hip/waist ratio <_< , Joseph identified her with male royalty and that this is a very egyptian idea? Ok, its not a slam dunk, BUT I think I have shown that the anti's arnt telling the whole story. In at least one ritual context Maat goddess of truth and justice=Pharoah, King of Egypt; Pharoah King or Egypt=Maat goddess of truth and justice. Joseph seems to be on to something. Again, not a slam dunk but something shared in the interest of full disclosure. Could it be that she was also Prince of Phaorah, King of Egypt? Could it be that we dont know everything about Egyptian symbolism? That is for you to decide.

I'm reading a book called "Hidden Treasures of Knowledge," a book by Stephen Morgan that I bought at the LDS bookstore and it has a real good explanation of the facsimilies. It devotes three chapters to the Book of Abraham and has one of the best explanations for the BoA that I've seen so far. He uses the Great Pyramid as an example showing that it is possible that Abraham and perhaps Jehovah himself visited Egypt and gave them the hidden knowledge of the priesthood. I'm still reading it so I'm not too sure of all of his arguments yet but it looks pretty good. Here's Deseret Book's description of the book:http://deseretbook.com/store/search?search...es+of+Knowledge

It appears that he believes that the priesthood tradition was corrupted in the Egyptian theology and that Abraham either used their images to teach the Gospel or he taught them the Gospel and they later changed the images to fit their mythology. His arguments with the Great Pyramid and City of On are pretty good.

for more info on the egyptian priesthood I recommend The Priests of Ancient EGypt. It was the text for the egyptian religion calss i took at UCLA. I like the section on their priesthood initiation ritual, no wonder Terah got confused!

I dont think either Abraham or the Lord gave the hidden knowledge of the priesthood to them. Rather I go with what the BoA says, they claimed it from Noah thru Ham, as opposed to Shem(the correct lineage).
