If he is part of an agrarian society, then maybe he needs to grow a lot of just one or two crops and trade his excess (of which he will have much because he has fewer mouths to feed) with the other farmers in this society for the things which will fulfill his needs.

There's another item to consider. Does having more kids automatically guarantee that the farmer will be able to obtain the land necessary to "grow and harvest wheat , corn (perhaps oats , barley or alfalfa as well) vegetables , fruit trees , raise chickens , cows , plow horses , etc?"

There are so many more things to consider than just "more hands = more product."
