Merriam Webster connects it to "Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old High German lust pleasure and perhaps to Latin lascivus wanton" and describes it as " intense or unbridled sexual desire".
It's about the spirit that controls the feeling - if we connect it to wanton that is the best definition, wanton meaning "‘rebellious, lacking discipline".
Lust controls us. If we have the spirit of God and are in control lust has no power over us.
