If you can, go to the Open House when it’s done being built.  Much nicer than looking at pictures.

Absolutely Calm. I will keep a look out for the opportunity to be able to visit

I know when the Preston Temple first opened up, the daughter of the or a previous land owner threw mud at the recommend desk and area. I guess she wasn't happy with the sale and so she chucked mud in the foyer area but they cleaned it up quickly!

There is an old saying 'mud sticks'. Fortunately, not so in this case.

It is!  No, I don’t think so.  I believe  the other two were built with little to no opposition and are well integrated in the areas now.  The Preston temple has a lot of dog walkers in its grounds and I’ve heard non members who pass it say that it’s a bit of a beacon!  It sits high up and at night you can clearly see the spire lit up as you travel along the nearby freeway.  I’ve not heard of any protests at them.  Maybe when they were first built, but I don’t think so now.  There are small numbers of protesters at Preston when the pageant is on I think but nothing significant.  Brits don’t really do protests! Unless it’s a hot summer! 😀  A few people may attend the planning committee meetings to argue their points (I’ve attended a few council meetings where things got a bit heated but not out of hand); generally once a decision is made, that’s it.

When I have been on the freeway going to the Lancashire coast. The Preston Temple certainly is noticeable, and acts as a beacon. Not seen it lit up at night yet, hopefully will one day.

I had not heard about that!

My dad, who was not a member, loved to see the Preston and London temples as he passed, when he lived near them.

Yeah! I have only seen photos of the temples in England but they are very, very beautiful! I heard that story from a former Preston Temple President. I know someone who is from Newcastle and I guess that makes him a "geordie" and he said that in England, A&W Root Beer is hard to find (or at least was) and if you did find it it was expensive. He said though that at the Preston Temple they have a drink machine and for some reason they had A&W root beer there and it was cheap! and so when his youth group would go they would load up on root beer!

That's pretty cool! I served in the London temple as an ordinance worker, and we've visited the Preston temple as patrons. We have family friends who are ordinance workers there now. When the Birmingham temple is completed, we will definitely be attending the open house. It's a few hours drive from where we are (Sussex), so it will make a nice overnight trip.

ETA: Just checked the location and the new temple will be on ground already owned by the church in the town of Sutton Coldfield.

I hope I can attend one of the open days too!  I live about 2 hours away and we are expecting the new temple to become our stake’s temple.  Currently we use Preston.  I have also been to the grounds in Sutton Coldfield a few times, for multi stake events, and to attend chapel on Sunday when I was visiting a friend who lives nearby.  As I understand it, some of the current buildings will be knocked down and replaced with the temple.

I was on my mission there when the Preston Temple did their open house and was dedicated. There was pushback but it was mostly religious pushback. Some religious groups tried to push back but did not have much success. The biggest pushback I know of was over the name since it is not actually in Preston. In general the locals didn’t hate it. There were some planning snafus but nothing super serious. I am going off of memory and this is over 20 years ago now so the landscape could be very different.

I am kind of surprised they are building another temple. The Preston temple was convenient but the London temple wasn’t anywhere near capacity. I doubt either of them are near capacity now.

I also would have thought Edinburgh or Glasgow would be next but not sure of the demographics. When I was there Edinburgh mission was usually the first or second highest baptizing mission in the Europe North area. My mission traded places with them. Then again our competition was France, Germany, the nations around them, and Scandinavia. Our numbers were not impressive compared to other areas of the world.

My husband served in the Birmingham mission and he has said the same.

It’s about three hours to drive to Preston temple from where I live, around 5 hours to London temple and around 2 hours to Birmingham temple site.  Some go once a month to the temple, many go much less often and I’ve not been for several years because it’s a full day trip and I struggle to get the time.  Maybe they are building this and the Edinburgh temple to help people attend more often, rather than because capacity is needed.

Iirc, the stated goal was to have a temple within a certain time distance from all members. I will try and find that.

added:  95% of members within 2 hours or 200 km.

There are 367 temples in operation, under construction or announced around the world.

“[President Nelson] invites us to attend the temple as our circumstances permit,” said Elder Stevenson. “Now, with 367 temples around the world, members of the Church have circumstances that are going to allow them to attend the temple. When those temples are completed, 95% of the members of the Church will live within 2 hours or 200km of the temple.

Thanks calm, seems likely that’s the reason then, the time taken to travel there.  On average it should be a little under 2 hours from where I live and I live close to the farthest edge of the area.

Oh, this is maybe interesting for @Tony uk to know. He is from the UK after all. Maybe he lives in Birmingham as well.

I live in Lancashire, North West of England. However, Birmingham is in the midlands, only a brief train ride away. As Dario mentioned, it will be of interest for me.

Oh sorry i didn't know that you lived so far away from Birmingham. I live on the westside of the Netherlands, in Beverwijk. Really close to the North Sea. Love spending time on the coast. So.. we basically live kinda close to each other isn't it?

Btw...merry christmas. 💛💙❤️🌲🎅
