Oh, my husband so looks like Gosling, especially his abs….dying of laughter here.

Got to say, it’s not like I trusted Daily Mail before, but this tends to make me disbelieve anything reported in it in the future…they are just too desperate for clickbait if they go this far.

In all fairness, if the only time you were exposed to members was through a visit to the Wasatch Front, you might buy into the blonde stereotype. The Northern European ethnicity streak is pretty prevalent in the Salt Lake Valley. When I first moved to Utah, I had a terrible time learning names because so many people in my new ward looked so much like each other. 😐

It is kind of amusing though...those "strict marriage laws" (I didn't read the article, but I imagine there is a twisted narration of the insistence that we marry in the faith) have led to a great many interracial marriages in the Salt Lake Valley in the latest generation. Faithful members moving into the area aren't all Northern Europeans these days. The "blonde" stereotype probably won't survive the genetic melting pot.

I suspect the reputation for beauty won't go away though.

My very dark haired daughter with the middle name, Raven, hated living in Utah because she felt like such an outsider. She’s earthy, And definitely not trendy nor blonde.

I liked living in Utah being a little bit different, so it didn’t really bother me, but I was definitely different.

I will have to ask my sister who takes after the English side of our heritage, including her dark hair if she felt weird. I am medium brunette, though I started out blonde as can be up until kindergarten, but facial features take after Mom whose family is more Scandinavian.  I never felt like I was different for having darker hair as there were more brunettes among my roommates than blondes and honestly, I have not seen blondes as the dominant look here in Utah. Maybe it’s like cars and you notice most cars that look like yours, lol.  My short, short hair was unusual when younger. Not so much now.

I'm a pale, golden blonde, with hazel eyes, clear face, 6'4". I think I'd be very attractive if I didn't have a weight problem. I'm 7th generation LDS on my father's side, I may have acquired my stature from my 6'6" dad, he and his grandparents had black hair. My hair comes from my convert mom, the Craycrafts seem to be auburn/redhaired, anti-Mormons, slave owners and moonshiners of Bathwater Kentucky, once threatening to kill my 7th generation LDS ancestor, John Shrout, the gentle giant.

Anecdote of John Shrout, street preaching, a voice from the crowd heckled, "How many wives did Brigham Young have?!" John answered, "I don't rightly know, when I die and go to heaven, I'll ask him." The voice retorts, "But Brigham Young didn't go to heaven!", to which John wittedly replies, "Well, then when you die, you ask him."

I am thinking the gentle giant was meant?

.... yes, I type on a portable device via a directional pad, very prone to typos and when my typo is another word both me and spell check miss it.

Yes, the Daily Mail is good for a laugh, but that's about it.

Are you familiar with the highly incisive (not to mention funny) British TV series "Yes, Prime Minister"? It's the follow-on of "Yes, Minister." This little scene tells a bit about who reads the various British newspapers. Just for reference, the Guardian is left-wing, the Morning Star is extremely left-wing, the Daily Telegraph is right-wing, the Daily Mail is a gossip rag, and the Sun has a very popular page 3, where it's kind of like Hooters, which is what Bernard is talking about at the end. Sorry for the minor vulgarity.

Well, he did before he left the church or maybe he's still on record. But yes, he probably had the "look" or the "glow" before then. 😆 I laugh but there has been studies on how the LDS have a certain look. https://www.ldsliving.com/mormon-radar-turns-out-you-can-identify-a-mormon-just-by-their-face-study-shows/s/86968

Yes, that's why I commented on that. 🙂

He says his family was, but he never was…his name may have been on record if his family was, but he should know if he ever believed in the restored gospel.

oops:

Quote

The Post story also said that the Church of Jesus Christ gives “beauty tutorials” and linked to an article called “Beauty Tips” from the 2001 issue of the New Era, a youth magazine which has since been renamed by the church. The New Era article doesn’t offer a guide to beauty tips in any traditional sense, but is instead a fictional short story about a girl who battles to overcome negative thoughts about her own self-image. After reading inspirational scriptural passages with her mom, the character in the story discovers that beauty transcends appearance and comes from a deeper source of faith and self-worth.

I don't know how accurate this news article is. But it appears he was and in another part not, so it's confusing. Edited to delete the news article I at first posted, it was distasteful in some other articles but here's a quote below from it.

[Being Mormon] socialized me at a young age. You have to pray in public, shake a lot of hands, talk in public, sing in church, stuff like that. It has definitely stayed with me.'

The “being Mormon” is probably not the best rendering of what he meant as it implies belief when seen out of context.  I think he obviously wants to distance himself from the idea he was a believer.  ‘Participating in the activities’ is probably closer to what he meant.

”RG: I grew up Mormon. I wasn't really Mormon, my parents were. My mom was really cool. She said, "This is an option, but this isn't the only option. This is an idea, but this isn’t the only idea. You have to find your own truth." I never really could identify with it. There's good things about going to church. [Being Mormon] socialized me at a young age. You have to pray in public, shake a lot of hands, talk in public, sing in church, stuff like that. It has definitely stayed with me.”

The Daily Mail will post the most outlandish rubbish.

Fun Fact: It was one of the newspapers that supported the BUF (British Union of Fascists) in the 1930s. They had one article titled “Hurrah for the Blackshirts” which were basically the party’s goons. Thanks to few supporting it and a good dose of Fascist Punching the Party never went anywhere.

Generally judging a newspaper by what it was doing almost a hundred years ago is a bad idea. The Daily Mail is rare for its longstanding dedication to publishing garbage.
