Painting Teak

Recommended Posts

Whosoever shall  paint Teak, interior or exterior shall spend all eternity in the outer darkness. 🤔

Whosoever should paint mahogany, cherry wood, Walnut and Oak interior or exterior shall spend all eternity in the Terrestrial Kingdom. Unless the exterior wood is below the deck line on a vessel.

Feel free to add to the list.

I used a “liquid wood” paint on my oak trim and cabinets- where will that set me? IMG_3367.thumb.jpeg.d229d870dba29c63cf3680462afa50ce.jpegThe floor is the original 90s orange color? The door trim is the new color.  Grain still shows.

You barely made it to the celestial kingdom! Maybe next time verify it with the captain of the boat (who's really into teak wood). ;)

It looks fine just don't ask me to strip the paint off. So far I've spent two days scraping paint off the intricate trim of this boat I'm working on and I have two more days just on six windows. I started out using a paint stripper but I moved to using a heat gun as the paint was just too many coats and too tough. Once you start painting a nice hardwood it's really hard to go back to Natural

At 30.00 per board foot and up teak should be oiled or varnished or a nice urethane. I use Bristol. It has Amber in it. Teak holds up real well in a wet environment, it has natural oils in it. If you have teak that has turned gray you can use oxalic acid too bath it and restore the color.

Retique. I’m in love. No need to sand or strip.

Interiors of old boats should never be painted, exterior, paint away. Old growth teak and mahogany are hard to come by. It Is a crime against nature. I spent a year restoring the Interior of a '62 Chris Craft. Just the salon, galley and dining area.

We have a ski boat with a teak deck, and I was imagining somebody painting the deck. Wood is so beautiful on a boat exterior in my opinion.

Did you take before pictures for an after comparison? I’d love to see what you’re working on.
