Matthew Andreasen Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 This is similar to the "last movie you watched" topic but with Church/Gospel related books. It could even be one you're currently reading. The last one I finished was "Saints," volume 1, and I'm about 80% through "Saints," volume 2. There's some crazy stuff people went through that you don't hear about in seminary/institute. For instance, I had no idea that Lorenzo Snow had to be resuscitated after drowning in Maui. (I was in Maui a month before I read that part--wish I'd had known.) Or that he and others were sent there to deal with a man who had set himself up as a prophet and was even training the Hawaiian Saints to conquer the islands and establish his dream of a Pacific empire. I appreciate all the time and effort that went into these books. The actual last Church-related book I read was "Pat & Kirby Go to Hell." It was a Christmas present from my daughter. It's a humorous and sometimes irreverent look at us peculiar people, but there are a lot of very interesting insights in there as well.
Stargazer Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 I find it hard to finish books these days. My attention deficit is really kicking in since I retired. So, here are the church-related books I have been reading, but haven't yet finished: Science and the Book of Mormon by Wade Miller Life Everlasting by Duane S. Crowther Forty Years: The Saga of Building the Salt Lake Temple by Mark Henshaw An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon by John Sorenson The Lost 116 Pages by Don Bradley I have several more that I've bought but haven't even started yet. I might finally finish them all by the time I'm 100.
Pyreaux Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 I have books I "read", that I read in pieces and often come back to later; The Tree of Souls - The Mythology of Judaism by Howard Schwartz This contains much of the Jewish lore, chain midrash about seer stones and holy robes that passed from Adam to other Patriarchs, to the angel Yoda who is assigned to look for divine sparks. The Great Angel: A Study of Israel's Second God by Margaret Barker This is basically the LDS Godhead doctrine in the Old Testament: The El Elyon, Yhwh and Ruah Kodesh 1
Saint Bonaventure Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 I'm reading a delightful book on the Reformation and the Catholic Church's response to it: The Church and the Age of Reformations (1350-1650) The authors, Drs. Joseph and Barbara Stuart find that 4 principles are needed if one wants true reform without schism--charity, unity, patience, and tradition. 1
