Names and terms that are no longer used

The Church stopped using, "bishop's court" more than twenty years ago.

Yes, I noticed that some items on that list are several degrees removed from current terminology. It’s as though the compiler of the list, like Rip Van Winkle, went to sleep 50 years ago, has just awakened and is only now observing that there have been some changes in the Church.

Or they were just being thorough because even if some terms are not in official use doesn’t mean there aren’t people somewhere using them.

Here’s a list from the 7th edition of the Church’s style guide of names and terms that are no longer in use by the Church. Take a look and see if any of them surprise you—plus, it helps to be aware of words you may currently be using that you might want to avoid in the future.”

The 7th edition apparently doesn’t say they were recently discarded, just that they were once used and are not officially used at this time, if it mirrors the 6th edition.

In fact, my guess is they simply keep the same list and add any newly discarded ones to it rather than just a list of the ones recently discarded.

Here is the previous edition’s list, which includes all the older, discarded ones, I believe.  Anyone have a link to the 5th or older editions?

Hmm…they have trimmed it a lot. Maybe they’ve tracked what is popping up in submissions.  I have seen people using bishop’s court quite a bit. Mutual is pretty rare in casual conversation, but maybe there are a lot of older writers submitting articles and stories.

Here is the fourth edition, the list of obsolete terms is at the end, just like the 6th.  I think it was published in 2009.  As usual, the Church is way behind in updating some of their own website.

One outdated term on the list that people seem particularly loathe to let go of is “Area Authority Seventy.” It seems like I see that, and it’s predecessor, Area Authority, all the time in casual communication,  yet, if I’m not mistaken, it hasn’t been part of the official vernacular in the Church since the ‘90s.

To clarify, the current term is Area Seventy. It is intended to differentiate men who hold the priesthood office of Seventy from General Authorities who also hold that office. General Authority Seventies have Churchwide jurisdiction; Area Seventies have charge of only a limited geographic area in the Church.

I get that. I’m just saying how it seems with the inclusion of some terms that are really, really old.

Technically this is dependent on if they break up the YW’s into groups or not. They got rid of the names because they wanted to give flexibility for the classes to be set based on the need and circumstances of the ward instead of by a strict age category.

My husband was just saying the same thing.  He's in the bishopric so hangs out with the YW a lot for different things (he'll be at girls camp next week) and it really annoys him.

This helps in my ward where there aren’t enough active Young Women for three classes. There aren’t enough active Young Men to make the three classes in the Aaronic Priesthood age range work either but still stuck with those.

I’m in the YW’s presidency and we’ve redone how we group the girls 3 times. The first due to the pandemic. We weren’t meeting in person and it made more sense to just have everyone together when we were only doing zoom. Then we did an older and younger class once we were in person more. Now we do a hybrid of the two, to help with both a limitation in leadership support. It’s been extremely helpful IMHO.

It really is a great option for the presidency to have.  It's just a little sad that one of the natural consequences is a lack of a good name for each class.

i can see that. Honestly it hasn’t personally bothered me. The names weren’t super great to begin with (beehive just doesn’t hold the same spiritual impact as deacon, and I don’t have a clue what a Mia Maid is or what a laurel has to do with anything). Plus the pragmatism beats out the symbol of a group name for me.

but it could also be that I’ve been eyeball deep in the concerns of my YW’s group for the last bit that for me it’s really just about real time implications for me on this. There’s less time to think of the abstract meaning/comparison between that and the boys’ programs when focused on 14 or so YW in the midst of toggling the school/social life with a spiritual one.

I mean there’s ceremonious blessings and titles as boys get older, and girls don’t even have a name to identify with .

How about Daughters of God = DOG.  No that wouldn't work🙄

Mia  Maid was from Mutual Improvement Association…

Laurels were made into wreaths to crown winners at the Pythia games and means award or prize, top of the class, so my guess it was to be synonymous with excellence…or it could be referring to the original legend where Daphne fled the embraces of Apollo to preserve her virtue and when he caught her, begged her father to save her (by destroying her beauty which attracts men even), which he did by turning her into a laurel tree.  A reminder to young women to defend their virtue at all cost (no, I do not actually believe that, would be horrified if that ever actually occurred to anyone).

The destruction of her beauty didn’t work.  Apollo got the last word , because he breaks off her branches to crown himself and others, uses her branches to make his lyre, her bark his quiver to keep his arrows.  Women didn’t stand a chance with Apollo.  One way or the other he possessed them.

Would it really be so complicated to make three standard classes with names, but to get permission to mix it up as needed and provide alternative names. ?

There would be those who just default to the classes, I am guessing.  There is a lack of ritual place for girls in the Church though.  We need to figure out something better.

The ceremonious blessings to me is more important. I really wish we had more of that to tie them more to a spiritual identity in becoming women/leaders in the church.

I'd likewise be worried about the defaulting. And there would still be the problem that splitting them would be a little different. Like would these classes still be age specific? If they were, would you just have a beehive/laurel class if there weren't mia maids. If there was one class would they all be mia maids. Or would you all the girls to keep a title and just let it be known that girls in this age group would be here and another age there. It would render the names even less meaningful in my opinion.

Could classes vote on what they want to have for names?  (I know that would be open to all kinds of off-the-wall possibilities, but perhaps leaders and teachers could encourage class members to think about what they wish to stand for, spiritually-speaking, and to have a name that reflects that?  Think of anti-Nephi-Lehis or Stripling Warriors in the Book of Mormon (not saying that either one of those, necessarily, would be appropriate; just citing them as precedent: Clearly, in each case, the names had spiritual significance for those who adopted them).

Just a thought.  :)
