You need to give language warnings in cases where that is all the exchange, lol.  Did they ever say anything besides the highly persuasive name calling?

No, I will edit a warning in. Guess I was thinking matters less when it is in a language most of us don’t understand. Kind of dumb of me when it is subtitled.

Yes, it does, and the West (including, and perhaps especially, given the country's oil needs, the U.S.) is playing right into Russia's hands.  The U.S. and the rest of the free world denounces Putin, while, at the very same time, what he is being denounced for is being financed by, inter alia, the United States, which, obligingly, continues to buy his oil.*

*And the environmentalists, for some reason, love the fact that the U.S. is producing less cleaner oil in favor of being forced to buy more dirty Russian oil.  Yeah.  That makes perfect environmental sense.

The US has been stockpiling oil for months to blunt any short-term crisis. Other European nations have been doing the same. In addition other nations that produce oil have been encouraged to up their extraction.

In practice what is likely to happen is that Russia will be forced to sell their oil to people who won’t balk at buying Russian oil. This means China and India most likely, maybe some others. India and China will pay less for it as Russia needs to move the stuff to get any kind of currency now that Russian currency is largely worthless. Then China and India resell it. Russia comes out worse. India and China probably come out a little better. It will take a while for the supply chains to redirect. This does require China and India to cooperate but they are incentivized to do so. They are oil importers and the price of oil going up hurts them. Plus they get cheaper oil.

While some like to suggest that the US should just crank up domestic oil extraction that has a lot of risks. Oil is a volatile commodity prone to booms and busts. Oil workers already go from steady paying jobs with a ton of overtime to unemployable in a nasty cycle. Increasing the size of the industry puts more people on that roller coaster and also makes bust times more likely.

If you need some weird/tragic humor from the sanctions read up on how the Russian OnlyFans girls are struggling now that they can’t get money from client’s credit cards. Turns out Russian civilization is only two evenings without western perverts away from barbarism. Many of the bigger porn sites have also cut off Russian users. They are not happy according to people I know who are fluent in Russian and are monitoring Russian-dominated sites on the internet.

Seeing stuff in writing sticks in my head much longer than hearing it unless I am personally involved.

My ward sent out a letter providing donation info.  One can donate to the humanitarian fund and specify for “Ukraine”.  Funds are going from the Church 100% to established charities in the area.

There are a couple of sisters from the Ukraine locally and they have been sharing info on family and friends and their needs.  Lifting Hands apparently has a shipment going out there from here this weekend.  I live south of Provo, check with your humanitarian specialist in your ward if you want more info…hopefully if they live near me they also know about it.  A local charity, Tabitha’s Way that our stake helps supports,  is sending a shipment of protein bars.

Nina's story has been featured here. You can follow her on instagram a nina_ivannna (yes, three 'n's) to see updates, what the donations are being used for, and to follow her own personal story. For those who still want to help, there is a new opportunity. Nina's paypal withdrawals were maxed out, but her employer, Cumorah Academy, has agreed to forward all donations made here. They will not take anything for overhead or administration, all of it will get passed through to Nina. Cumorah Academy is also a registered US charity, so proceeds to Nina are tax deductible.

If there are any Canadians on here besides me (I see you Duncan), whether in Canada or abroad - I have made a website. You stick in your name, email, and postal code (UPPERCASE, no spaces) and it will generate a boilerplate email to your Member of Parliament, the Immigration Minister, and opposition Immigration critics. None of your information is saved, and you can tweak the email as you like, or send it right away. It asks MPs to lift the visa requirement for Ukrainians to come to Canada, to simplify the refugee process through measure we took during the Indochinese Refugee Crisis, and to help Ukrainians currently present in Canada to maintain their legal status as needed.

I've been wondering about this.   Not sure how to word this, but I'll try.  Ultimately, the goal of the community serving refugees is to get them back into their own country or back to their homes if they are just displaced somewhere in their own countries, assuming they can go back safely.  Obviously that is never going to happen in many cases for one reason or another.

As I have watched all this go down I have thought there is a good chance in comparison to other situations of that being a possibility.

With the legal stuff in the US if a "refugee" makes it here there is a pathway to citizenship.  It is meant to be a permanent thing.  Most of the Afghans coming here are "parolees" (hate that term, bad connotation) which currently doesn't have a system past 2 years. Many people are trying to get the Afghan Adjustment Act passed so that they will have a similar citizenship path.  It's just very obvious that it won't be safe for many of these people for quite some time to go back to Afghanistan.

So I've wondered if countries shouldn't be thinking of something more temporary for those in the Ukraine, at least for the time being until we can see it will be difficult for them to go back to the Ukraine.

I wondered if they would.  They serve refugees in Utah and internationally both in the camps and sending shipments to those in need.

To those who want to donate please pay attention to what they are asking for and only donate those items and make sure they are clean and good shape.  People often think a charity should accept anything, but it often becomes a burden to them if you are donating things not asked for or not in good shape.

There was a plot to send Chechen special forces to kill the President of Ukraine. It was thwarted. It was assumed that it was US and/or their allies who passed on the intelligence of the plan which was thwarted due to advance knowledge. Ukraine is saying today that the plot was given to them from the FSB which is Russian intelligence, the successor to the KGB.

There is a chance that this is propaganda designed to turn Russian against each other but it would explain a lot if true. It also means Putin is much more isolated than originally thought.

The Russian invasion is collapsing in many areas. There have been mass defections and surrenders. Many of the Russian soldiers have no food or almost no food. Once disarmed many of the POWs are being moved to live with civilian Ukrainian families. Ukraine is promising to release POWs into Poland if the individual soldier’s mom is there to pick them up.

Experts have been weighing in on why Russian vehicles are breaking down now that they have more footage and photos. Turns out most of their wheeled vehicles are using cheap Chinese knockoffs of military tires and they have also not been doing proper maintenance. Probably a corruption thing. Buy cheap tires and pocket the rest. Same with a lot of the other equipment. The military radios are pretty much all gone and they are using cheap civilian models. At this point any intelligence service with the time and resources knows as much about where the Russians are as their own command. If they have good satellite coverage they know more than their own command.

The drones Ukraine uses are the Bayraktar model. It comes from Turkey. This is probably intentional as using drones from the US or other allied powers opens them up to claims that they are also being operated by NATO. Turkey is not likely to take that risk. Anyways have a song Ukraine made in praise of their drones:

Pretty much. I think it is designed specifically to make the situation look less serious to the troops and more like a teenager screwing up since a lot of them are conscripts just out of school it belies the seriousness a bit and makes surrender less scary. It is also good PR in general and is likely to turn Russians against the regime when ‘the enemy’ is treating their children with more concern and care than their own leaders.

Oh my gosh, watching the news with these awful conditions heaped upon them and seeing the smiles on some of their faces is astounding, their human spirit should win the war alone, this country is a special place.

I'm hoping all the countries surrounding will get in there and take out the Russians immediately, not necessarily kill but scare. We should have war pacts about all of us going in and preventing this ever happening again, maybe there is something on the books about a leader doing war crimes like this and the repercussions?

Oh and something I watched the other day with a group of civilians walking toward the army trucks on foot and blocking them from coming in.

So many stories, showing the spirit of these people makes me want to be better.

Yes I have. I think it is a myth. And if it is not then God allowing or even causing such a calamity is not lovingly holding us in his hands.

Did I imply it wasn't?

Let me ask you.  If there is a loving compassionate and benevolent God, one who is omniscient and omnipotent, what good do our prayers do for the people of Ukraine?  Will the prayers convince God to save the people?  Will they stop the war?  Will God maybe take Putin out if we ask hard enough?  Or persuade Putin to change his mind?  Didn't God know what was going to happen before Putin sent in troops?  If yes then what good does praying to God do?  If he is really there can our prayers convince him to intervene

We have the means to stop this. We don't have the willpower to use it. We are afraid to honor the promise we made to protect Ukraine if they gave up their nuclear weapons. Our word is worth nothing. Why would God listen to us?

It is not my understanding that we promised to defend them against threat, but that we would "refrain from the threat or use of force against" them.

It is clear that Russia lied.  Surprise, surprise.  It is not clear that the US has violated any promise, unless there is some other language you can show me in the agreement that I am unaware of.

It is not about willpower, it is about wisdom.  The consequence would be world war III with the threat of nuclear destruction of countless people.

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow. You think WW3 is not on the horizon?

I'll research the wording of the agreement.

I hope not.  I don't think we should provoke it with a nuclear nation though.

In other news Russia has announced that they are going to start conscripting arrested protestors and sending them to the front. So you need more troops and your first thought is to go for the people who are so opposed to the conflict that they literally risked their lives protesting it? I am sure they will be dedicated warriors.

Ukraine’s parliament met today despite that building being a key target in the attack to pass a few vital measures. This was not announced until it was over.

There are unconfirmed reports of Russian officers shooting their own wounded. I hope it is a lie.

Ukraine has submitted an application to join the European Union. This probably won’t pass until the conflict is over but it is a start. The EU does have some mutual defense requirements.

#IStandWithRussia started trending late last night. In a bizarre coincidence that is morning in Russia when the workers would show up to run the Russian bot farms. Another fun propaganda fact is that the normal social media trends have bizarrely changed since the Russian sanctions hit beyond the influence of their army of bots. It will be interesting in the aftermath to find out where Russian funding was going. The pro-Russia media outlets throughout the world are floundering and don’t seem to have a coherent narrative being pushed to all of them anymore.

In good news it looks like a ceasefire negotiation is going well. We’ll see if it holds. The big thing is setting up humanitarian lines to allow the evacuation of civilians and the wounded. It is unclear who would benefit more militarily. It might give the Russians the ability to resupply but it also gives the people of Ukraine more time to get more weapons and ammo picked up at the Polish border to the front and time to coordinate new defense strategies. The number of abandoned Russian vehicles is still rising. Ukraine announced that they would start counteroffensives soon. I think that is overly optimistic but I will be glad if I am wrong.
