Moroni Disappearing from New Temple

Well, we never did want Moroni promoted as the symbol for our Church.  He was only a messenger, a very important messenger, but still only a messenger for our Lord and Savior.  Declaring the gospel in the book of his Dad to all nations.

His image is still up there even though we may not see it sometimes, though.  Just as people in the spirit world are all around us even though we don't usually see them, in this dimension.

According to the church, "Location is paramount in deciding whether to include the statue or leave it off. Factors such as building codes and cultural perceptions play a large role. Many of the smaller or remote temples do not include it in their designs, such as the Paris France and Port-au-Prince Haiti Temples."

Yawn.

Few things could be more somnorific than dredging up a year-old story to stir up interest in a topic that was not all that amazing to begin with.

Right.

In Mormon culture, the raising of the Moroni statue has become an "event" that many faithful LDS pause their activities to attend and a certain newspaper covers.

Angel Moroni statue ascends to top of Provo City Center Temple

While I'm correcting spelling, typography, grammar, and word usage, the word you're looking for, Dear, is spires. ;) :D  You're welcome.  I'm happy to be of service! ;)

Looks like Tacenda was the victim of an overly vigilant auto-correct function. I doubt she meant to type spirals.

But thanks. I couldn’t decipher what she was trying to say, and in this instance, my intuition was not keen enough to figure it out.

Duh, I guess that would be a good thing then. So are our [spires] at the churches used for the same thing? Or probably coincide with Bernard's literally and figuratively reply. :)

Perhaps. I just know I have seen photos of some statues where the lightning rod is embedded within the statue structure. I think it would only be an issue in locales where the risk of lightning strikes is higher.

Incidentally, on a ward or stake meetinghouse, it would more commonly be termed a steeple or a tower.

There has not as yet been an angel statue removed from a temple, there continue to be temples constructed with angel statues, and there’s no reason to think this will change.

While I agree with your sentiment generally, the Hong Kong temple did have its Moroni removed  with this renovation. One could speculate on numerous reasons for that, and could certainly point to other renovations that haven’t removed it, but I do believe it’s possible in some future renovations you may see that.

An angel statue has never been a required feature for a temple; some older temples do not have it. To conclude that the absence of a statue on some newer temples indicates a watering down of the Church’s uniqueness is to ignore what goes on day after day within the temples.

Perhaps there's some deep unique Church Doctrine if they are removed.

If the angel Moroni is supposed to represent Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

Perhaps when it's time for the Missionaries to be called home it will mark the end of that period.
Perhaps when the righteous in the world begin fleeing to Zion instead of being searched out the temples will be a refuge from the nations rather than an ensign to the nations.
D&C 124:36 For it is ordained that in Zion, and in her stakes, and in Jerusalem, those places which I have appointed for refuge, shall be the places for your baptisms for your dead.

Hong Kong is, imo, a special case given what is happening with the government there.  I wouldn’t extrapolate from there to what is happening elsewhere in the Church.

Implications for Shanghai and its temple could also be applied to Hong Kong.

The Idaho Falls temple originally didn’t have a Moroni.  I was sort of hoping they’d take it back off as part of the renovation; IMHO it’s too large.

The Provo City Center is too large, IMO.  I feel like it is going to fall off when I drive by.

I seem to recall that in some countries all that gold on a statue was inappropriate to the low income of the general populace.

(I guess based on the idea that the money was better spent on the poor?  But actually I think I remember some concern about attempts to steal the "riches" of the temple)

Anybody remember that?

I remember it as being more of avoiding an “in your face” moment, not having it to avoid the appearance of the Church bragging or being for the more affluent.

Just an update to this. The new rendition for the Provo renovation has removed the Moroni.

With the last dozens (or more) temple renditions released without Moroni, and with it being removed in renovations such as this, I believe it’s safe to assume you won’t see Moroni on any temple going forward any time soon.

Why is it “safe to assume” that? Planned new temples in Layton, Saratoga Springs and Red Cliffs in St. George all are anticipated to have a statue.

Added later: The above is not a “renovation” as such. It’s a planned removal of an existing structure and replacement with an all-new one. So it’s not like this portends a removal of the statue from future renovations that truly are renovations and not total removals-and-reconstructions.

Added yet later:  I just did a fact-check of my own post and learned that the Provo temple project will not be a total demolition and rebuild, as I had earlier assumed. Rather, it will be more like what transpired with the Ogden temple; that is, a removal of the outside “skin,” to be replaced with a new exterior design. That’s what I now understand, anyway. Maybe there’s more to it that I don’t yet grasp, however.

This doesn’t alter materially my point about the Provo project not necessarily portending the discontinuance of Moroni statues in new temple construction going forward. But in the interest of accuracy, I did want to set the record straight.

Indeed they are. The temple rendering for Layton was released in October 2019, Saratoga Springs in September 2019, and Red Cliffs in April 2020. One of the most frequent arguments for the large rash of temple renderings not having a Moroni atop is either size or local customs. This would be to ignore renderings released for all subsequent Utah temples where cultural issues would not preclude this and their size would be of appropriate proportion (Orem in June of 2020, Taylorsville in August of 2020, Deseret Peak in April of 2020, Syracuse in February of 2021, Lindon in April of 2021, Smithfield in November of 2021, and now the renovation of Provo in November of 2021). To say that there is not any big trend on this would not be at all accurate, in my view. Below I've taken a chronological list of all temples (completed, under construction, or announced) where it is known what the final design is (I've removed temples planned that don't have renderings released). In gold are temples which have (or will have) a Moroni. In black are those that aren't. Two current temples (Hong Kong and Provo) are listed with appropriate qualifiers.

What would make this above list better is if I could list them in chronological order of when their renderings were released. Unfortunately (and thankfully), I won't be taking the time to do that. If we are to assume that this is chronological based on rendering release date (it's not), then there have been 36 temples that have released renderings since the last one with a Moroni on it, including one temple that will be having the Moroni removed (Provo). The original argument was that Moroni had not disappeared from any temple, to which the reference to Hong Kong was dismissed for being possibly cultural. An example now with Provo is dismissed in reference of being a significant rebuild. One does not have to be a believer nor critic to notice a significant trend, nor would identifying the above such trend have to imply any underlying reason anymore than pointing out what is apparent.

The trend is undeniable. But you oversold your point by declaring, “I believe it’s safe to assume you won’t see Moroni on any temple going forward any time soon.”

I don’t believe you, or anyone else at this point, can competently say that.

I can't start threads, so hopefully this will just be a bleep on the thread. But what do you think about the change of the logo for the church?

Old news that, if I recall correctly, was discussed here at length a couple of years ago when it happened.

But to answer your question, I’m in whole-hearted agreement with it. And no, I don’t believe it amounts to a ditching of the Moroni image as one of an array of symbols that reflect the Church of Jesus Christ and His restored gospel.

I don't think that is an official "change". I have also seen it in orange and purple on other church related sites.

Where did you see it?  I will be very surprised if this became the dominant logo colour.  Blue works better in most contexts, IMO.
