My Introduction

Recommended Posts

Good day everyone. I'm new to this forum and look forward to being able to contribute.

I was raised in the Church and am a faithful, active member; I have served a full-time mission in Mexico, been sealed to my wife, and am currently a CTR-4 co-teacher with her.

I was studying for a BA in Spanish Language and Literature, but am now pivoting to getting a BAS in Aviation Science (will likely still have Spanish as my minor). I currently work two jobs: one full-time as a compliance specialist for a non-emergency medical transportation coordinator and another freelance job as a writer. I am also a volunteer officer in four local units of secular, non-profit organizations (Masonic).

I'm not sure what else to include here, but I look forward to getting to know a lot of you. If you have any questions to get to know me, shoot and I'll do my best to answer them!

Yes, I've been in York Rite since October 2019; got my degrees and orders at the Colorado River Fall Festival in Laughlin, NV.

How is Commandery out there?  I know some states can be quite political.  It's interesting, they call themselves Christian, play the tolerant ecumenical card in lodge but in Commandery itself it sure varies.  Also the uniforms, so wish they ran things like the KT does in the UK, Canada and elsewhere, I hate the overpriced class A's.  Also, miss the triangular aprons, those things were awesome.  Love what the York rite says they're about but in practice?  At least here stateside, meh i'll pass.  I do wonder what they'll do as time goes on, here and other states they keep combining with other commanderies due to people either dying or demitting out, they really can't seem to get the newer people, they tend to go SR like I did.  Think a lot of that depends on the lodge too, if the lodge as a larger number of single people they do tend to lean SR, at least that's what i've seen.  The KT/York rite guys I've known tended to have families so it was a better fit, at least that what I noticed.

By the way, how many people in grand lodge are BYU grads?  Remember seeing this a few years ago, that and i've known a few LDS members who were vets, church members make great members of the craft.

I absolutely love my Commandery. I also might really love the class A's, but that might be just because my wife thinks I look like a musketeer lol; I haven't gotten everything for mine yet; I still need sleeve crosses and the chapeau.

The York Rite overall seems to have been steadily growing in Utah for the past few years (despite Utah being the smallest grand lodge jurisdiction in the US).

I haven't joined the SR yet, but I do know that the SR of Utah only has one SR Valley, in SLC.

I honestly don't know how many Utah Masons are BYU grads, but I do know of at least a handful.

As for the article that you shared, I have met that (now past) GM; he's quite a neat person to know. Since then, he's also been President of Cabiri International, Intendant General of the RCC, and GM of the Allied Masonic Degrees for the USA.

More my speed but that's me.  I may dislike the class A's but a lot of others do.  I know one guy who love's his chapeau.  I just want the triangle aprons back, those things looked awesome with a suit.

Hmm, that's interesting.  How are the Demolay and Jobs Daughters/Rainbow Girls out there?  I'd think they're thriving.  Where I am due to the influx of transplants we're slowly seeing things become like they are on the West coast, the esoteric masonic lodges/SR towards the cities and everything else around the suburbs.  SR is huge here, the reunion we have is so well done.  Interesting that you only have one valley. did a google, neat building.  It looks like you may do something similar to us, one huge headquarters where everything is done.  If I'm ever in SLC, I'm checking it out.

So he's a Shriner and heavily into YR?  Wow.  You're fortunate, Utah is a great state to be a Mason in, I'll admit i'm just a tad bit jealous.

I've seen one triangular apron, and I'd love to be able to wear one to Commandery one day.

DeMolay and Job's Daughters are pretty big up in SLC, Provo, and Price. We don't have those down here in St George yet, but we are hoping to start a DeMolay chapter here within the next year or so (especially now that Scouting, BSA isn't as big here in Utah anymore).

If you ever do get a chance to visit the SLC Masonic temple, I wholly recommend that you do so. The inside is gorgeous.

I do love being a Utah Mason. As I mentioned, we're among the smallest grand lodge jurisdictions in the States (in fact, we may well be the smallest at this point); about 1,450 Masons in total, according to the report at the last annual communication this past February. The benefit from this is that everyone knows the GM; the cost is that he has you on speed dial. 😂🤣

I must confess that, though I've heard of the Order of St Thomas of Acon, I don't know all too much about it. What little I do know about it I learned from an acquaintance's blog post. Are you a member of that body?

If they did bring them back I think you'd see more interest in the York rite, sure would from me.

Not surprised DeMolay and Job's Daughters would be big there, SLC is a very family oriented state.  Also for youth they're fantastic orgs.  I'd think they would be growing even more now with the BSA on the way out.

SLC period is a gorgeous city, I'll add that to the list.  You may be small but your people are fantastic.  Big issue some lodges have is they let just about anyone in now, big surprise they cause problems and scare the good people away.  Lol true, maybe everyone knowing the GM isn't so wonderful...

I'm not, knew someone who was.  Think it's structured like the Priories in the UK are hence the mantle and tunic.  They're invitation only, think most of their membership are York rite, I could be wrong.  For me outside of SR i'm also eying these guys, looks like they have something in Utah.

The Masons in SLC have a history of generosity and helpful support to the cultural life of the city. Back in my undergraduate days (1970's), I performed as an extra with the Utah Symphony. At the time, the orchestra held its rehearsals in the Masonic temple. A wonderful memory for me was trying to follow Maurice Abravanel's conducting techniques as we rehearsed the Mahler 7th Symphony. The temple environs were beautiful, but I was so intimidated in trying not to screw up the performance that I probably didn't fully appreciate my surroundings. So belatedly ... thank you, SLC Masons!

How does the church treat them?  So far I've had good experiences with them.  That's another big plus for the LDS church, they try to get along.   Outside the Catholic Church so many denominations here stateside like to play politics with Masonic affiliation.

The (now past) grand master whom you referenced just recently gave a 30-minute educational the Grand York Rite of Utah's lecture series about bodies beyond the York Rite, and it was just posted on the YouTube channel of Cryptic Masons International here, if you're at all interested.
