Where are the Lost Ten Tribes?

Where are the Lost Ten Tribes?

  1. 1. Where do you think the Lost Ten Tribes are?

    • They are scattered among the peoples of the earth, and are being gathered by missionary work and patriarchal blessings.
    • They are under the polar ice cap.
    • They are on another world.
    • I believe they are separated from us, but still on the earth, and are being/will be gathered.
    • I don't believe the stories about the tribes of Israel are literally true, so I don't believe they will really literally be gathered.
    • None of the above adequately reflect my views (please explain).

There is a place for faith and I fully support faith but faith must be built on a foundation of reality and truth.  Take for example the resurrection.  All of the scientific evidence would have us believe that when your dead your dead.  Can we have faith in the resurrection?  yes I believe we can and once each of us is dead...if there is then life beyond the grave then I guess we'll know. But as to the items I listed above, we can pretty much lay those items aside and know that they never took place or happened at least not in the real world.

I don't know about that. According to some scientists we should not be here at all, but we are. I am pretty much in the same camp as JLHPROF. I have a shelf of items that I do not understand or that conflict with observed phenomena. I believe that eventually every conflict will be resolved, maybe not in accordance with our current paradigms, but it will happen.

Socialism is technically defined as: a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.  I think of "we the people"...

Many people think of Socialism as a bad thing because they think that means Government would be deciding everything, but Government is WE THE PEOPLE so I don't see that as a problem, necessarily.

Its always a convenient boogeyman to remove democratic from the term democratic socialism. Makes it sound scarier.

The Lost 10 Tribes refers to 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel being dispersed during the Assyrian Empire. Only two tribes, Judah (Jewish people) and Benjamin remain, although I believe Benjamin was assimilated into Judah centuries ago.  The Talmud seems to indicate one day all of these lost tribes will be assimilated into Judah.

Where did they go? These list tribes didn’t go anywhere. They were assimilated into different groups of people.

To me, this Ten Tribes theory is a religious conspiracy theory from millennia ago...still continues today.

I don't see how anyone living today could be identified as a member of the ten lost tribes. I am surprised so many here hold to some form of belief in a gathering. Is there something about it in Latter-day Revelation? I will admit that if the theory were true, the only way would have to involve them going away somewhere else.

I misunderstood the poll question and want to change it to say that I don't believe any of these stories. I was afraid that it meant there never was such a thing as the ten tribes. I knew it happened after the death of Solomon when there was a political and religious revolt against Judah. Without further revelation, (I am not LDS), I do not see any indication the Lord would reward these people with His special protection. Few saw this coming:

"Then the people seeing that the king would not hearken to them, answered him, saying: What portion have we in David? or what inheritance in the son of Isai? Go home to thy dwellings, O Israel, now David look to thy own house. So Israel departed to their dwellings."

---3 Kings (1 Kings) 12:16

After the people found their political leader, one of Solomon's former aides, Jeroboam, it was reasoned by Jeroboam that it would be necessary to give the people a new religion:

"If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem: and the heart of this people will turn to their lord Roboam the king of Juda, and they will kill me, and return to him."

---3 Kings (1 Kings) 12:27

A new altar was built, they worshipped two calves made out of gold, and chose non-Levites to be their priests.

(3 Kings is 1 Kings in Catholic Scriptures)

It's a fundamental teaching of the BIble, at least in the way I understand it.  And of course it is also taught in latter-day revelation as well.  It is part of the covenant promises (and curses) that the LORD made with Israel:

Quote

1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the Lord thy God hath driven thee,
2 And shalt return unto the Lord thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
3 That then the Lord thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the Lord thy God hath scattered thee.
4 If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the Lord thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:
5 And the Lord thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
(Deuteronomy 30:1–5)

Edit to add:  There are many many more verses that could apply.   For example, see the topical guide:  Israel, Gathering of.

The latter-day gathering and restoration of all Israel, not just the Jews, is a very common theme of old testament prophesy.

Thank you for the quote. Do you believe that if the theory were true, the only way would have to involve them going away somewhere else?

Oh wait. I see you answered my question in the poll question, Incognitus. Do you believe that the members of the 10 tribes know who they are themselves?

I believe the LORD made it clear that he knew they would stray and therefore be scattered, "going away somewhere else".   Even the Deuteronomy 30 verses that I quoted above give a strong indication that it's going to happen exactly that way (i.e. "it shall come to pass, WHEN ALL THESE THINGS are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse...." - Deut 30:1)

They may not know specifically who they are (probably not), but when they are taught the gospel they begin to understand who they are.  This is also something taught in the Bible.  Deuteronomy 30:1-2 hints at this, but also for example Zechariah:

Quote

8 I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.
9 And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.
10 I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them.   (Zechariah 10:8–10)

And also Jeremiah:

Quote

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.
13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord.
14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the Lord, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.
18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.   (Jeremiah 3:12–18)
