Richardson Studies on Second Coming

Recommended Posts

While doing a search of the ten tribes I came across a site by Nate Richardson.  I am sure he is a temple recommend holding member, there is room for good people to disagree on things.  Of course we should blog insights from what we learn in church.  He does have some interesting ideas though.

his interpretations should edify him.  However he has no right to receive revelation for other members of the church.  42:11 Nd the 28th section of the Doctrine and Covenants say the same thing,

main thing of his site is signs of the times.  He quotes conference talks and puts what they say on a calander. Says eclipses and meteor showers are signs of the times, with certain events.  Compares Book of Mormon timeline to timeline when millennium will begin.  Seems to know when prophets will be in Jerusalem and books by John Pontious and Duane Crowther are authoritive.

says Corona is a sign of the times ending oh half hour of silence, and riots second civil war.  Says Temples shutting down another sign of the times and Portland riots another civil war.  An increase of earthquakes since 2000 as well.  Quotes what Elder Bednar in Christmas Devotional to a prophecy when he quoted Samuel thenLamanite.

If astronomy and geology that he quotes wee signs of the times why didn’t the prophets tell us?  Says to expect a major earthquake when the Salt Lake Temple is rededicated.   I don’t think anything out of the ordinary will happen once the building is dedicated again.  Eclipses and meteor showers have come and gone and Life moves on.

riots and the COVID panic will pass.  He seems to think elections of 28, or 32 will be the last ones we know.  Nothing out of the ordinary will happen in any us presidential election in the near future.  And Missiouri will be cleaned out.  Outs timeline on the prophecies.  Some of those propehecies are if people don’t repent.  Wonder what makes his interpretation more likely than what we heard through properly appointed channels.

an ardent homeschool person, said he gave up animal products, interesting Government ideas, and interesting ideas on mental illness, moving when growing up, and mental illness.  Criticizes mind leering drugs.  He can have those opinions but he seems out there on several ideas and thankfully his opinions are not church doctrine and his last days timeline and scientific things to quote the signs of the times are out there.  The dates of his prophecies to come to pass I think for the most part will come and go without anything out of the ordinary happening.  Be confusing if every person had ideas on timing of millennium and other things we don’t hear from people the Lord called and we know are called.

I think anyone who quotes John Pontius as any kind of authority is suspect.  I haven't read Duane Crowther in quite awhile.  I'm working my way through 65 Signs of the Times Leading Up to the Second Coming by David J. Ridges.  I don't agree with everything I've read, but to the extent he simply lets the scriptures on the subject speak for themselves, a lot of what he says makes sense.  I'm trying to follow his advice to avoid catastrophism and alarmism.  I try to not worry about things I can't control, and, Lord knows, there are a lot of things happening that are outside the average person's control lately.  Perhaps the sensible authors who write about this stuff would counsel avoiding undue concern, something I think is sage advice.  That said, it's hard to not look around this seemingly-increasingly-crazy world in which we live and not see at least subtle indications (and some not-so-subtle indications) that, "Yep.  The day's coming."  It feels far closer now than I would have estimated just a few months ago. I'm ready for Zion, even if I'm not "ready" for Zion.

I'm just glad that I live in a community in which the people remain kind and considerate, and are not running amuck, "tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive" (Eph 4:14).  In nearby Springville, most of his neighbors did not buy the obscene nonsense taught by the Chad Daybell Prophet, and he is now thankfully awaiting trial in Idaho.

The gentleman responsible for this compendium has posted here before in times past under the moniker @MDalby.  I believe he simply provides the compendium and allows its sources to speak for themselves. http://www.ldslastdays.com.

A useful selection.  However, too much of importance has been left out in some categories.

Perhaps.  What would you recommend that he include?

There have always been floods, earthquakes, pandemics, wars, droughts and famines, ect.  Some of them have been really bad in history.  What i believe these things have in relation with the 2nd Coming is they they will be occurring more often and more intense than we have seen in history.  Then one can look at all the major fault lines in the US.  Whether San Andreas,  New Madrid, the North west fault off Washington, or Wasatch range in Utah, all of them are due or overdue.  Big earthquakes have occurred on these fault lines in history.  The difference is back then, they shook trees and rocks.  Who cares.    Now large cities are build near them.  In addition all the political problems in the US and the world.  I will not even attempt to give a timing on when Christ comes again.  But if you look at the world, climate change, whatever else, it is clear to me that the 21st century is going to see far bigger changes globally than we have seen in any century in history.  The young people today are going to see far more interesting and scary stuff in their lifetime than us older people have seen.  A great storm of many things is coming.  Right now, we are just seeing the outer bands.

For what it's worth, I finished reading David J. Ridges, 65 Signs of the Times Leading Up to the Second Coming.  I can post my notes, if you don't think it would take the thread too far afield, grapevine.  Let me know.

I think it's mother earth that will shut us down, before I think God will. He's very disappointed in our lack of care of this beautiful world, most likely. Pollution sets things in motion IMO. Even Covid! These are my opinions. But the other day it did feel like the end of times are headed our way. But hopefully we'll take care of God's gift, this awesome world.

I don't want to take the thread too far afield if the OP isn't interested in going in that direction.  If I don't hear one way or another in a few hours, I'll go ahead and post them.

P.S.: Oh, what the heck!  If I incur the OP's wrath, I can always delete them.  Gimme a minute. ;)

Verse 3 – “I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces . . .”

Verse 9 – “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

38.

Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:39

39.

2 Timothy 4:3-4

40.

False Prophets, False Miracles, and False Churches will Abound

Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:22

Revelation 13:13-15

Brother Ridges cautions readers to not interpret this prophecy too narrowly: While it does refer to false religious leaders, it can also refer to “[m]edia idols, liberal philosophers, corrupt politicians and business people” and others could fit into the category. Signs of the Times 117.

41.

People Refuse to Believe the Signs of the Times

2 Peter 3:3-4 – “Where is the promise of His coming?”

42.

Some Will Fear that Christ’s Coming is Being Delayed Too Long

D&C 45:26 – “[T]hey shall say that Christ delayeth His coming until the end of the earth.”

Brother Ridges doesn’t mention this, but the Book of Mormon, in detailing the reaction of skeptics who claimed that prophecies of Christ’s coming were not fulfilled and that, thus, believers’ faith was in vain, provides a type for what will happen at the Second Coming. See 3 Nephi 1:5-13.

43.

D&C 45-36-40

44.

Moses 7:62-64

Ether 13:5-6

46.

Many Temples Will Be Built

Often, “Mountains” are synonymous with Temples: See Isaiah 2:2, D&C 133:13

47.

A Temple Will Be Built at Jerusalem

Nowhere in the scriptures does it state that the Jerusalem Temple has to be built on the exact site of the Dome of the Rock, a mosque that is so sacred to Muslim. There is actually plenty of room on the so-called ‘Temple Mount’ for both.” 65 Signs of the Times Leading Up to the Second Coming 125.

48.

The Gospel Will Flourish in Egypt and a Temple Will Be Built There

Isaiah 19:18-22; I don’t know if Brother Ridges is wresting the scriptures here or not, but given that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has received official recognition and has been allowed to build a chapel in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, perhaps Brother Ridges’ prediction isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem.

49.

The Rainbow is Withdrawn

See History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 6:254

50.

The Constitution Will Hang By a Thread

D&C 101:77-80

Will the Constitution be destroyed: [sic] No. It will be held inviolate by this people; and, as Joseph Smith said, ‘the time will come when the destiny of the nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.’ It will be so.” Journal of Discourses 7:15, quoting Brigham Young, at Signs of the Times 130.

Unfortunately, we as a nation have apostatized in various degrees from different Constitutional principles as proclaimed by the inspired founders. We are fast approaching that moment prophesied by Joseph Smith when he said: ‘Even this nation will

will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground, and when the Constitution is upon the brink of ruin, this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean, and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction’ (19 July 1840, as recorded by Martha Jane Knowlton Coray; ms. In Church Historian’s Office, Salt Lake City). (President Ezra Taft Benson, Ensign, November 1987, 4).” Ridges 130.

51.

Destroying angels will be allowed to go forth on the earth

D&C 86:5-6

What is the matter with the world today? What has created this change that we see coming over the world? Why these terrible earthquakes, tornados [sic], and judmentsWhat is the meaning of all these mighty events that are taking place? The meaning is, these angels that have been held for many years in the temple of our God [in heaven] have got their liberty to go out and commence their mission and their work in the earth, and they are here today on the earth. (The Young Woman’s Journal, Vol. 56, p. 643, October 8, 1894),” at Ridges 131, bracketed material in original.

52.

Abomination of Desolation

Brother Ridges notes that the Bible Dictionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, s.v. “Abomination of Desolation,” says that this term refers to Jerusalem being under siege, which it is and has been.

See also Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:32, Matthew 24:15, New Testament Student Manual, The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles 152.

53.

Rampant Wickedness

Isaiah 5:20 – People will call evil good, and good evil

54.

Babylon Will Fall

Revelation 19:11-13, 17-21 – The Savior is He that sits on the horse

D&C 29:21 – “The Great and Abominable Church” and “The Whore of All the Earth” is Babylon (the world)

55.

A Great Hailstorm Will Destroy the World’s Crops

D&C 29:21

Revelation 16:21

A “talent” =/= 75 lbs., because the New Testament and Old Testament systems of weights and measures are different

56.

57.

Waters will Flow from the Temple at Jerusalem and Heal the Dead Sea

See Ezekiel 40-46

See Ezekiel 47:1-10

Judah must return. Jerusalem must be rebuilt, and the temple, and water come out from under the temple, and the waters of the Dead Sea be healed. It will take some time to rebuild the walls of the city and the temple, & c.; and all this must be done before the Son of Man will make his appearance.” Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith 286, as quoted by Ridges at 140, emphasis removed.

[T]he meeting at Adam-ondi-Ahman, before the Second Coming, will be a rather large gathering, where Adam will gather his righteous posterity together. Christ will come also, and those present, who are or have been in authority, will turn their keys of power over to Him to use as He ushers in the Millennium and governs the world during the Millennium as ‘King of Kings, and Lord of Lords’ (D&C 29:11, Revelation 19:16).” Ridges 140; See also McConkie, The Millennial Messiah 578, 587-588, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith 157.

Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:31-36

D&C 88:90-93

There will be wars and rumors of wars, signs in the heavens above and in the earth beneath, the sun turned into darkness and the moon to blood, earthquakes in diverse places, the seas heaving beyond their bounds; then will appear one great sign of the Son of Man in heaven. But what will the world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. But the son of man will come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man, which will be as the light of the morning cometh out of the east.” Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith 286-287, at Ridges 155.

[N]o one [will] see ‘the sign of the Son of Man, as foretold by Jesus; neither has any manb, nor will any man, until after the sun shall have been darkened and the moon bathed in blood.’” Id. at 280, as quoted in Ridges 155.

d. The Work Goes on After Mortality

i. Elder Dallin H. Oaks – “Another idea that is powerful to lift us from discouragement is that the work of the Church . . . is an eternal work. Not all problems . . . are fixed in mortality. The work of salvation goes on beyond the veil of death, and we should not be too apprehensive about incompleteness within the veil of mortality.” Elder Dallin H. Oaks (Nov. 1995), “Powerful Ideas,” Ensign 25, as quoted at Ridges 182, ellipses in Ridges’ original.

ii. Joseph Smith – “When you climb up a ladder you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top: and so it is with the principles of the Gospel—you may begin with the first, and go on until you have learned all the principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have passed through the veil before you will have learned them. It is not all to be comprehended in this world: it will be a great work to learn our salvation and exaltation even beyond the grave.” Ridges 182, quoting Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith 348.

Auto correct hit I am guessing:

Quote

When you climb up a latter you must begin

Ladder....one of my favorite quotes.  I love both the thought we don’t have to struggle to find the necessary knowledge of the gospel and how life all fits together in time and eternity all during mortality and second, so much more fun because so much more stuff to learn.  My goal in life was once to be a professional student, if they ever figure out the biochemistry experiment that I am and balance it all out, I am hoping to be in classes till my dying day, but the best thing is even if that doesn’t happen, I will get plenty more chances to study and experiment and analyze in the next life as well.

Or, perhaps, since the book is about the latter days, I just had latter on my brain when I should've had ladder. :D  I hope I've now corrected that egregious error, lest I incur the wrath of someone such as the esteemed, formidable, R. Scott Lloyd.

David Ridges has some good insite.  Robert Miller and a few others have good things to say too,   And ther interesting thing he wants people to email the BYU president to tell them to stop teaching evolution and have school uniforms.  Why doesn’t the board of trustees headed by the prophet say anything on that?  Anti vaccination too.

links to someone who either quotes Ezra or Esdras comparing us presidents to a feather. President would be taken out by now.  I am sure there will be several presidents whose terms come and go without things lik,e that happening.  And. Nothing out of the ordinary will happen when many of the eclipses take place.  Earthquakes abound after the Salt Lake temple is renovated.  I doubt that will happen.  He knows when the prophets will be slain in Jerusalem and by when deer tian dates of Second Coming will happen.  Knows more than properly called brethren I guess.

I think a big one he misses is the Boxing Day quake and tsunami. 2004 Dec 26, over 225,000 dead.

The Coming of the Lord by Gerald N Lund is very good.

Who exactly as you mentioned several names...Are there any universities that have school uniforms?  I was under the impression those are for high school and younger.

I know.  I'm reading the first edition now (and taking notes, for whatever little that might be worth).  I believe a second edition is coming out next month (as is an updated edition of Signs of the Times, this one expanded to 100 Signs of the Times Leading Up to the Second Coming).  I debated reading the current editions versus simply waiting for the new editions to appear, but I figure reading and taking notes from the current editions puts me ahead of the curve: I can make my way through the new editions faster, simply taking notes on what has been added. :)

No one knows the day or time of His coming

I am just plodding along until that happens

Resistance is futile. ;)
