Seems even timelier today than in 1970

The quote below is from President Harold B. Lee in general conference of 1970. He was a counselor at the time to President Joseph Fielding Smith.

I present it today, because its timeliness for today, 47 years removed, is startling:

Quote

We have some tight places to go before the Lord is through with this church and the world in this dispensation, which is the last dispensation, which shall usher in the coming of the Lord. The gospel was restored to prepare a people ready to receive him. The power of Satan will increase; we see it in evidence on every hand. There will be inroads within the Church. There will be, as President Tanner has said, "Hypocrites, those professing, but secretly are full of dead men's bones."  Matt. 23:27 We will see those who profess membership but secretly are plotting and trying to lead people not to follow the leadership that the Lord has set up to preside in this church.

The only safety

Now the only safety we have as members of this church is to do exactly what the Lord said to the Church in that day when the Church was organized. We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through his prophet, "as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me—as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith."  D&C 21:4-5 There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that "the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name's glory."

End quote

Thank You so much Scott for the quote. I really like your posts.

The world is becoming more wicked and immoral. Death and human suffering is on the rise. Evils like pornography, immorality, and secular attacks on religious freedom are seen as normal. Gay marriage is being legalized everywhere. There is no doubt we are living in the last days.

Today news articles are reporting that Russia  created an invincible missile. Vox is reporting "America’s system to stop nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) is unreliable. The system has only passed 10 of 18 controlled tests. That means the system in place to protect America from a Russian — or North Korean — nuclear weapon has just over a 50 percent success rate even in the best conditions."  There is no doubt in my mind our world will be destroyed by fired and the scriptures will be fulfilled.  We will soon be in a nuclear world war III due to so much sin and wickedness.

I cry foul. I think the world is not as bad as you and Scott believe. https://www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2016/12/23/14062168/history-global-conditions-charts-life-span-poverty

What about religions' attack on the secular? Works both ways. I like that the world has more equality all around. And more love all around, it seems, unless you lean alt right. Then it's really sad, and very un-Jesus like. I believe there are quite a few Christians that are alt right. And they glean a lot of it from the Bible. In which I think comes from man made scripture, not God breathed at all.

A few years ago I was so struck with the timeliness of the emphasized bit that I included it in my sig line (see below).

You got that right!

Also, I like your sig line by Pres. Packer, the youth can look forward to being grandparents one day! :) Oops, I read that quote to be the one where he mentions that youth will be grandparents one day and not to worry that the world is ending. I guess I sped read the sig line and thought it was saying the above.

Putin is campaigning on military rearmament but it is mostly bluster. Even with conscription Russia cannot keep their military staffed and they have insisted they are going to go to a volunteer military soon but cannot get enough volunteers.

His invincible missile almost certainly does not exist. Yes, the United States would have a difficult time stopping an advanced nuclear tipped missile. We would have a pretty good chance of shooting down a North Korean one but since the early Cold War the Russians have always had enough ICBMs to wipe out a good portion of the United States and we have never had the ability to stop such an attack even with our ABM systems. They might be able to take down a few missiles but if Russia pushes the button we push the button and both countries burn. This is not a change. This has been the status quo for decades. China could inflict a lot of damage too. It is called the MAD doctrine and has kept the peace for a long time.

You are repeating the talk of the 60s and 70s about the imminent destruction of the world.  It did not happen then and there is no guarantee it will happen now. It might but it might not. Being a prophet of imminent doom is fun (done it myself) but absent actual revelation you are just guessing.

Yeah, but it would also bring conformity with the current ongoing trends. Don't see much prophecy about that happening. Still, it could happen and I would be okay with both. I am guessing recreational marijuana will never be a thing.

On the bright side legalization in Colorado led to me laughing:

These videos hopefully won't dissuade people from voting for medical marijuana. But I already know they will, which is very sad because of the good there is with such a natural cure for many ailments. I use CBD oil and it is hopefully going to prevent Alzheimer's happening to me. It's already helping with my anxiety and with getting rid of pre-cancerous or possibly cancerous growths on my body.

I've read the studies, but there are few because of the placement that Marijuana has been put in as a schedule I drug, so therefore not as many studies can go forward.  It's done wonders for children with seizures, also helping cure cancer. So many things it's helped with. So that's one for the books that this world is getting better and hopefully big pharm will go away!

I hope we can all remember to love one another, especially those who are different from us.  Let’s work together to solve world problems right here, right now.  However bad world conditions might be, that does not give us an excuse to just sit back and let it happen.  Let’s be the change we wish to see in the world!  I believe in a gospel of hope!

Me too!!

I agree in many ways...we are not seeing the love in the world because we are setting ourselves apart.  The generation now with the help of all us can see the good in each individual..I believe what God wanted was to see the soul..not the color, race..standards of living..but to love each soul  We are getting there...albeit the hard way maybe.  There is good in all of us. No baptism...covenants can change that there is good anyway..every where.

In fact, Elder Smith carried on a running battle with several scientist apostles (Talmage & Widtsoe) in the early part of the 20th century.  We need to be tolerant of the diversity of views within the Church on matters which are not part of LDS doctrine.

It should be noted that Talmage and Widstoe lost that battle.

The quote below is from President Harold B. Lee in 1972.

I present it today, because based on the number of LDS who apparently believe in "pre-Adamites",  its timeliness for today is also startling.

Quote

I was somewhat sorrowed recently to hear someone, a sister who comes from a church family, ask, “What about the pre-Adamic people?” Here was someone who I thought was fully grounded in the faith.

I asked. “What about the pre-Adamic people?”

She replied, “Well, aren’t there evidences that people preceded the Adamic period of the earth?”

I said, “Have you forgotten the scripture that says, ‘And I, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth, the first man also. …’” (Moses 3:7.) I asked, “Do you believe that?”

She wondered about the creation because she had read the theories of the scientists, and the question that she was really asking was: How do you reconcile science with religion? The answer must be, If science is not true, you cannot reconcile truth with error.

These PSAs came out in a state with recreational use already allowed just to raise awareness against the danger of drugged driving. I doubt they will be used to fight medical use.

I do not see these General Conference messages as inconsistent with or countering the one shared in the OP, and I don't think President Lee would have seen it that way either.

If the battle was for evolution to be taught at BYU, then I agree that they didn't lose and take back my statement.

If the battle was for evolution to be taught in the Church as being compatible with the doctrines of creation and the fall, then they lost.  Since this is a forum dedicated to discussing Mormonism and its doctrines and not the curriculum of the biology department at BYU, I thought the context of my comment would be obvious without needing further explanation.

The Russia news really is not new and really changes little.  Russia has been able to hit any target on earth through its ICBM and SLBM for decades.  The US defense system is not effective against a single ICBM and could not handle 100 of them coming in at once.  I worry less about Russia.  I think if war occurs anytime soon it will be against China.  China has a growing military and has the economic base to rapidly increase its military development.

Nobody lost except those who believe in relying on the "arm of flesh" and losing their testimony in the veracity of scriptures.  BYU is only teaching evolution to enable their biology students to be "conversant" with all the theories with their future colleagues throughout the world.  Those assumptions, conjectures and narratives are not chiseled in stone.  They will always be modified in the face of new evidence and new interpretations.

I don't see medical pot to be a real issue.  Everything has a legit purpose.  Tobacco has a good purpose.  There is plenty of stuff at the local pharmacy that is just as poisonous as pot is.  Even worse if used incorrectly.  Even if used correctly they have worse side effects than pot.
