Garden Girl
Dear fellow posters... you all know what a fan I am of BYU, particularly BYU Sports... Valentinus always gives me a bad time about my devotion to the Cougars. But I am so distressed this year about BYU football!! What in the world is going on?!! It's been 40 years since we've had a 1 - 5 season... losing 5 games in a row... and next week we play Miss St and will undoubtedly lose that game to make it 6 losses in a row. Needless to say, I've emailed the coaches, Sitake and Detmer, and also Tom Holmoe. I've asked them if they are familiar with the Peter Principle because that seems to be what is going on... the PP where a person can advance and be promoted/progress until they eventually reach the level of their incompetence. Could this be the case? After all, Detmer coached High School football... high school!! Now here he is at a Division 1 level university. For example, he called a play of a Hail Mary pass with 4th and 1, instead of trying for the one yard. Naturally the receiver dropped it. I hope this can be turned around... I will always absolutely love the Cougars but I feel such a sadness today. It hurts my heart when the ESPN commentators talk about how BYU's Offense is the last/worst in the country. It's such a dramatic change from previous years. I'm watching the Navy - Air Force game as I write this... Navy is ahead 38 to 24 in the 3rd quarter... it was announced today that Coach Ken Napatomolo(sp?) is the winningest coach in Naval history... too bad we couldn't make him an offer he couldn't refuse when we were seeking Mendenhall's replacement. Well, thankfully the women's volleyball and soccer teams are doing great... and soon it will be basketball season... GG 3 Link to comment
rpn
Has it occurred to you that having losing seasons which decrease interest in football may be a path to getting BYU to abandon football (as it causes brain damage in so many)? I do not understand how any mother can sign consent for their child to play, given what we now know about its impact on those who play. 1 Link to comment
Jeanne
GG...your devotion is amazing...I, too have been a fan like this...with Utes...and the very early days of Utah Jazz..lived and breathed the team, the game, the coaches and the history of the whole thing. I feel for you...but hang in...it is fans like you that they are counting on. You rock...I will route for BYU...unless of course they play my teams! I got into an argument with Dave Checketts one time at the Salt Palace when watching the Jazz...he was over all the marketing and stuff. They took away the radio station (the only one) that Tooele County could pick up.. We are a crazy bunch aren't we??? It is nice though that you can come here an vent...good luck...next week??? No matter how good the helmets are (and they are excellent), the football player's brain gets bounced around inside his skull each time he gets hit. 91 of 95 NFL players show CTE, and it is particularly pernicious for the still developing brains of middle and high schoolers getting into the sport. CTE is a neurodegenerative disease of boxers, football players, and military veterans with repetitive head injuries. It leads to early dementia in which the victim does not have self-control. Aaron Hernandez, for example, had stage 3 CTE when he killed himself in his prison cell, and had been convicted of murder. 1 Link to comment

You are actually medically correct... even common sense... but I'm a person that grew up in the 40's- 50's when we rode our bikes, roller skated, played baseball and soccer without helmets, knee or elbow pads, etc. etc. None of my friends nor I suffered more than a few scrapes or bruises... Mind you, I don't say this as justification for no protection. etc, it's just that I grew up with a different mindset than today of loving football and all sports as we played them. All of the protective gear today seems like a real step forward in protecting players, although I have read the reports of concussion and other damage. But I still love the games/sports. (I was a cheerleader for three years). Football has been such a big part of campus life for generations... boola-boola... twenty-two skadoo... that I think it would be a loss for BYU not to participate... But, that's just me... I so agree, I will forever be changed after watching "The Concussion" with Will Smith. Also, a former quarterback for BYU that I'm sure is well known on here is Jim McMahon. I know people think he was a brat and all, but he now is showing some signs of brain damage or dementia. And with many players it affects them so much they commit suicide. I almost feel like I'm back in those days where they would watch players kill their opponents in Mesoamerica. Because this sport eventually does kill some. But I understand the love of the game, as I sit here with my son and husband watching football on many nights. And I'm on the laptop. Link to comment

GG In English football leagues, teams get relegated to lower or higher competitive levels based on their win-loss records. The Y was the biggest loser from Utah going to the Pac 12. Obviously BYU needs to be relegated out of division 1 football, they're not playing at a division 1 level and don't deserve to play there. They'd be a powerhouse in division 2. Also I have learned from a good source that Detmer is gone at season end. Edited October 8, 2017 by Button Gwinnett Link to comment

Well, we certainly aren't now... but under Mendehall we played many a Div 1 type game, even beating some of the powerhouses on occasion. Many of our players have successfully gone on to NFL teams... even playing major roles, i.e., McMahon, Lewis, Young, Pitta, Van Noy, etc etc. I do think it best if we have a new Offensive Coordinator because the Defense has played pretty well most games... but are knocked back because of the Offense... anyway, if we are to play anywhere close to previous years, something has to happen. Garden Girl
Well finally... BYU looks poised to win its 2nd... 2nd.!.. game of the season. Of course we had to find a team even worse than us... San Jose St Univ., so I don't know what all the hoopla is about as we go to the half... 24 - 6... one good thing is that Mangum has finally been playing close to his performance last year. He's been accurate and pretty decisive so far. Guess I'll at least cheer that it's a welcome change...Maybe we'll gain some much needed confidence for our next (last?) game next week. I'll believe your "good source" when what your "good source" has said will come to pass actually does come to pass. Midseason staff shakeups are less common in college football than in the pros, perhaps, but if your source is correct, why postpone the inevitable? And as for bumping BYU to FCS or Division II or Division III or Division XXXV, Cougar fans have been spoiled for generations: Down years such as the one the "Y" is having are much more common elsewhere.
