bsjkki
My question about this article is why would Deadspin write such an in depth article in the history of carpeted gym floors in LDS Chapels? https://www.google.com/amp/deadspin.com/satan-scourges-us-with-it-a-brief-history-of-carpeted-1793111588/amp Link to comment
bsjkki
Sorry about the double post...phones 😕 Link to comment
thesometimesaint
I have no idea. However because LDS Gyms (Cultural Halls) are used for more than just basketball, maintenance costs are less for carpets. Link to comment

The article is very long...way more in depth that the topic deserves. It's odd. Link to comment
Calm
Maybe someone did it for a project? Link to comment

I always thought they were to help with warmth and sound, considering they were used as part of the chapel when needed and in a few wards, dividers would be put up and up to four classes were held there on Sunday at the same time. bsjkki
The article has so far generated 113 comments. I find it amazing people at Deadspin are discussing flooring choices in LDS gyms. :/ Edited March 15, 2017 by bsjkki Link to comment
gopher
I don't think it was intended to be a serious discussion on LDS flooring choices. Carpeted basketball courts in LDS buildings are often (and loudly) complained about by those of us that love basketball. The author is probably LDS and is having some fun by writing a semi-serious article about the topic. I enjoyed reading it and could relate. Thanks! 1 Link to comment

In multi-use situations like a LDS Cultural Halls carpets require less maintenance costs than word. Link to comment
Calm
Did you read the article like suggested? Edited March 15, 2017 by Calm Link to comment
bluebell
I think that in most new chapel construction they put in hardwood, don't they now? All the new chapels that i know of have hardwood (and only 2/3's of a basketball court unless they are a stake center. Kind of sad). 1 Link to comment

I think the author is LDS too and agree it was only semi-serious. I remember they put orange carpeting in some gyms--made for horrific wedding pics. 1 Link to comment
Calm
I think the author does stuff for NPR and some other media. Perhaps he is a freelancer and this just interested him one day. Hard to come up with original stuff all the time. Give him a plus for a topic that no one else has probably done before. 1 Link to comment

The Nehor
My understanding is that they started carpeting because when the cultural hall is used as an overflow the chairs and people's shoes make more noise on the hard floors. Could just be hearsay though. I got it third-hand. Link to comment
oMtonic
FWIW, last year our ward building had the carpet removed and a wood floor put in to replace it. Link to comment
VideoGameJunkie
I very much dislike carpeted gyms. Link to comment
