How likely am I to be mugged if...

I walk from the north temple train station to the energy solutions arena on a Tuesday late at night?

I've never ridden the train before but my friend and I are going to the dancing with the Stars show that night and she wants to take the train from Layton.

I'm a big wimp.

I'm going to check with a co-worker who worked and lived downtown just a couple of years ago but from my experience I'd say the chances are about zero.  I've never heard of anyone being mugged in SLC, ever, even when I lived downtown. I'd not even think twice about it.

I did have some acquaintances have their car broken into, that was the middle of the day.

Update: Kelsey agrees with me, and she says if you aren't alone you should be good.  If you are a wimp a little can of mace should help you feel a lot better.

Have fun!

Be afraid. :shok:  Be very afraid. (Just kidding, of course!)

I think I can fill a niche.  I think I'll start an escort service.

Wait.

That came out wrong.

Sorry. ;):D

A Lot less likely if you were prepared......  As in carrying a concealed weapon.  But only if you are comfortable and/or trained.

Does carrying a concealed weapon keep you from getting mugged? I can see that it could perhaps stop a mugger who attempts one. This must all depend on your definition of when a mugging has actually occurred.

(Note: the above may sound contentious, but it's actually an attempt to flesh out the idea that weapons prevent crime or just have the ability to thwart a crime already in progress. This is also not attempt to turn this into something political or a discussion about gun control.) [insert all the smilies here]

Thanks guys!

Turns out it's actually at the Maverick center so we'll definitely be driving.  😊

Your chances of encountering harm while driving to your location are infinitely greater than your chances of being mugged, statistically speaking.

It was so much fun!  But we were almost late because we were stuck in traffic .2 mile from the venue.  They really need to make that section of the road work better if they are going to be funneling hundreds of people that direction in a short amount of time.

My only other complaint was that when we finally got to the parking lot, we were stopped by men telling us it was $10 to park!  We both panicked because neither one of us ever have cash with us, but luckily, i just happen to grab some on my way out the door and it ended up being enough.  If they are going to require people to pay to park i think they need to tell them that, and also tell them they will need cash!

The show was a lot of fun though.  I don't watch dancing with the stars on t.v. (i'm more of a so you think you can dance fan), but it was still cool to see. :)

Hello Bluebell...

I'm at the Lirary so I can reply here... my computer at home is acting up and I think my mouse died yesterday... So I've not been able to post and I'm having withdrawal...

I'm glad you had a good time and came through unscathed mugging-wise... You'd be surprised the "weapons" you have at hand, i.e., a set of keys... you can hold a key and really do some damage to face/eyes etc.  It would stop someone for sure... you just have to be ready to use it seriously and not be wimpy about it... after all, the perp intends to harm you or worse...

Will you please pass the word to Cal, MS, BD, etc that my computer is down... Tell BD that I'm waiting until after Jan 4... she'll know what that means.  I'm going down next week and look at computers, iPads, etc and will be getting something... Can hardly wait...  Thanks...

Usually, mugged is talked about in past tense.    In other words, if I were explaining a situation after the fact:   ex. 1.  I got mugged.  (ie my wallet was stolen and I was roughed up). ex 2.  I was almost mugged. (perpetrator was not able to complete the action).

It's a statistical fact that most crimes will cease upon the perpetrator getting shot. [insert all of the winks here]

Weapons can be useful in specific situations. If someone pulls a gun to mug you and you go for a gun you have you are likely to be shot. If someone pulls a knife or threatens you from a distance a gun might help. If they are up close your chances of successfully defending yourself with a firearm decrease dramatically.

Which is true but not that helpful. Can you pull a gun quickly enough if you have already been attacked? Can you ready it quickly enough? Can you hit them if you do in a situation of intense stress and an adrenaline rush? The answer for most people is probably not, even for those who think they could.

If one is concerned enough to contemplate carrying a weapon, then perhaps the area should be avoided.  I know this can't always happen, but having a gun on your person cannot guarantee you will not be mugged.  What it does almost certainly guarantees is that any confrontation will have a potentially lethal component.

Without going into too much debate, all of the most recent tragedies have happened in areas that one would not associate with thought of avoidance for safety reasons.

that have been broadly publicized

It is possibly that more have been killed in areas that were dangerous in total even if mass shootings have not occurred as much there that we are aware of.
