Merry Smithmas everyone!

Since they're out of school today my kids are making a big sign for the garage door that reads: "Happy Birthday Joseph Smith."  It's a great missionary tool. ;)

Due to the other thread, I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Smithmas and a Happy New Year.

Good grief. You're not supposed to leave out Christmas.

Let's try that again.

Happy Smithmas everybody!

And happy 2 days before Christmas!

And happy 9 days before the new year!

I hope you have enough lights to light up the letters at night. And don't forget to take them down after today, leaving only the Christmas stuff.

We try to keep the flame of Smithmas burning bright all year round.

But I thought that was only an anti-Mormon thing.  You mean to say that it has now become a mainstream thing too?

Man, I must be off my game today. I'M KIDDING. We don't really celebrate smithmas anymore than we hand out pass-along cards for halloween.

To be honest, in my circles I never saw anyone ever celebrate Joseph's bday. But wouldn't begrudge anyone if they did. I know we made a big deal out of Pres. Hinckley's bday once. I think since it's close to Christmas people probably don't want to outshine the Saviour's birth. But would always like that our bdays were close, I'm a Xmas eve baby.

Heck!  And here I thought you might be affording me a cool birthday party.  It's personal, Buckeye.

I'll be celebrating the way I do each Dec, 23. Sleeping late, yawning and napping.

Then happy day before Tacendamas, Tacenda!

I hope many of your loved ones will wish you a happy birthday. We wish you a merry birthday! We wish you a merry birthday, and a happy new year!

I'm not much of a singer, but there ya go.

Have you considered increasing the amount of pass-along cards you hand out for Halloween, lately?

Just wondering, does the word merry sound strange or outdated to anyone else besides me and my family. I'd rather say happy, as in happy birthday.

Happy Smithmas day, everyone!

And happy 2 days before Christmas day!

Ah you're the best Ahab, it was great! Merry Christmas and a happy, peaceful, healthy, prosperous, new year!

My second-to-youngest son, who joined a Christian denomination that among other things, doesn't believe in celebrating Christmas, came to me yesterday complaining that Christmas was a Catholic Church invention in order to replace pagan festivals.  He also cited a verse in Jeremiah that supposedly forbids Christmas trees.  He was upset that his mother invited him to the family Christmas dinner.  He was rather offensive about it, raising his voice to me and then left without giving me a chance to respond.  My response would have been something along the lines of "So what if the Catholic Church invented Christmas to help get the former pagans weaned away from their worship of false gods?"

Perhaps I should ask him if Smithmas is OK.  :D

No doubt it is more important to him to make a big stink about Christmas than it is to obey the commandment that says you must respect your parents?

Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out how celebrating Christmas could break any commandment.  Just because the Catholic Church did something doesn't make it wrong.  I mean, the Catholic Church teaches against adultery, murder, and robbing banks, right?  So that makes those things OK?  What is so special about Christmas that it becomes sinful to celebrate it?

I think the best thing to try to teach anyone is the importance of a positive outlook on life, trying to see the good side on all things. Like our 13th Article of Faith talks about how we believe we should seek after everything that is good, lovely, and virtuous, even if someone with a negative outlook sees the same things and thinks they are bad or not praise worthy.

Like Santa Claus for example. Sure, the guy is fat and that's not really a good thing, but the guy is wonderfully charitable and that is a great quality to emulate even if he isn't real. And other things like that.

As for x-mas trees, the verses in Jeremiah are most likely discussing the push by prophets at that time to rid Israelite veneration for the female deity Asherah, who was believed to be the cohort of El. Asherah was symbolized by a tree (or a pole or a grove of trees). So while 99.99% of people today would never make the association, it's possible to view an x-mas tree as some sort of honor for a female deity.

If you want more information on Asherah, a good LDS place to start is this article by Dan Peterson, which discusses the links between Asherah veneration and Nephi's story in the BOM:  http://publications.maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/publications/jbms/9/2/S00003-50be458eb2b313Peterson.pdf

You ought not to celebrate your birthday or allow anyone else to do so. It diminishes the respect and worshipful attitude one ought to have toward Christ at Christmastime.

(In case the humor-impaired don't get it, I'm satirically mocking the sanctimony of certain anti-Mormons and other critics.)

Thank goodness I know your humor somewhat Scott, thanks for that!  :)

I hope you have a happy birthday.

(And I'm being sincere this time. Our youngest was born at Christmastime, and I always feel anxious that his special day not get shunted aside in all the holiday celebrating.)
