I ride my bike (Supersix Ultegra!) with my Brother In Law, who has always been a much faster and more powerful rider than me.

This year I was keeping up and then, riding in the lead.

But when I looked at data (ride-with-gps/  strava)  on our past rides, our rate was not higher, but was the same.

 

My Brother in law had slowed down to below my rate. He thought he'd fallen out of shape over the winter.

And he also had a tiny but persistent cough.

 

About a month ago, he had a checkup and an xray.

This showed that he had an embolism, but also spots on his lungs and kidneys and a mass in his abdomen.

 

They more recently diagnosed him with stage 4 of a rare and aggressive cancer.

 

With other and more recent complications, he now lives in constant pain, on oxygen, and while he used to ride 50 miles of hills, a few day's ago his son and I were going to take a short walk with him, but he couldn't make it to the end of his driveway.

 

This all took place in the span of 5 weeks or so, and this world has changed so suddenly and unexpectedly,.

 

I shared two videos from the Mormon message at his initial diagnosis, "Mountains to Climb" and "Daily Bread: experience".

At that time he viewed them without seeing or really hearing them.

 

Just now he texted me that he watched Mountains to Climb, and that "it was good to see that, the way I feel today".

 

I'm not a Mormon, nor is any of my family, but the messages that I found have done good for a good Man living in pain and is likely not long for this fight.

 

You should know the value of your Leadership, whatever books or system creates people like that, with insights like that, must be very good.

 

Also, I don't know if Mormon's believe in praying for the sick.

I was thinking of going to the nearest temple (there is one in a nearby town) to see if they would or even could include him in a prayer, even though he is not a Mormon.

Would this be an imposition or inappropriate or a strange  thing to do, by someone who isn't even part of their church?

Sorry to hear that. I'm dealing with Stage 4 cancer, though mine is not so aggressive, and I count it a blessing to be able to still physically do the things I have always done, though I notice that I am slower and slowly losing endurance. For example I always enjoyed a nice five or six day backpack deep in the mountains, with long miles and steep climbs part of the fun. These days, a mellow overnight or day hike is what my legs and lungs can handle.

And I don't know about EVERY temple, but the ones around here, if you call them, you can have a name put on their prayer roll where they are prayed for daily as part of the temple ritual. I have never been asked if that person or myself was a member of the church.

Buzzard, I'm sorry to hear that you're also ill and my prayers for You too. This was is a rare 'soft tissue sarcoma' that metasized into his lungs and kidneys. Because of the embolism, they couldn't quickly go in for the biopsy, but put him on a thinner to reduce the embolism. The thinner in turn caused or aggravated a hematoma in his stomach which burst causing incredible pain to him. This is three major things, the cancer, hematoma, and embolism. Tomorrow they go ,finally, to a specialist on this cancer in Boston. Thank You for taking the time to respond, it's very kind of you and very much appreciated. I also wish you well in your treatments, remember to eat healthy fresh foods, I think they can help and can't hurt.

I regularly put my sister and brother's name on the prayer list in the Temple. They are not members either. You can call the Temple; most members will either gladly do it, or put you in touch with someone who can do it for you.

Cancer is such a terrible disease and has affected so many lives.  I lost both of my parents to cancer - my mother with breast cancer and my father with lung cancer.  Please let your brother-in-law know that there will be more people praying for him and his family.

 

Yes, you can go to any temple or call them and ask that a name be placed upon the prayer rolls.  They will ask for the name.  His name will stay on the prayer roll for many days (I have forgotten the exact number) and will be prayed for multiple times each day by many different individuals and groups.  Please feel free to add his wife's name and his family to the prayer roll also.

You can call multiple temples if you would like or ask them how long they keep the names on the list so you can call again later.

It is an honour to be asked to pray for others. I can't think of an LDS who wouldn't be eager to do so and grateful for the chance.

Yes, please... please do call your nearest temple(s) and ask that his name be placed on the prayer roll.  The names stay on the roll for two weeks.  Don't hesitate to add your own name to the list... this will help you to be able to strengthen him.  I'm so sorry someone so young and active has had this happen... so unexpectedly... we never know what lies ahead for any of us... or when.

I regularly put names in the temple for prayers, including my own.  At 73 I have a few health issues that come with age, and I like knowing that prayers other than my own are going forward on my behalf.  Whenever I go to the temple, I always participate in the prayer circle and feel it an honor when we say the prayer for those whose names are on the roll.  A new session is held every hour from 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 PM, each with a prayer circle at the end of the session.  A very beautiful ordinance and experience.

You can also call the Elders to give him a priesthood blessing.

I'm sorry y'all are going through this.

By "Elders" I assume you mean missionaries. John, the missionaries (and other men in the church) would be glad to give a blessing. If you see them you can ask for the missionaries who live in your BILs area. They will be able to send them his way. You can also contact the mission office for that - if you don't see it listed somewhere ask when you call the temple.

For a blessing, those who have authority from God anoint the sick person's head and say a prayer over him. Sometimes it heals the body, sometimes it brings peace and understanding.

I just learned this so I am sharing with everyone. My friend was in the ICU on oxygen. She wasn't allowed lip balm with petroleum in it. Her lips were quite dry and it took me awhile to find it. Something to consider if you want to do something to make things easier for him.

There are stores that cater to providing comfort, with in fo, I would go to an online support group to get ideas to help with teeth and other delicate skin and areas.
