PtolemyGlenn
Um well, the default uniform in the LDS church seems to be the slacks, shirt, tie thing. Too much of an inconvenience? LOL You should try heels, with a slip that clings and a neck line that wants to creep, bra straps that pinch, makeup that won't stay and hair that ... And then you wind up freezing because the men are all bundled up in a coat too, and won't turn the heat on !!! The price of vanity. My gf wears little to no make up. As I love her the way she is, and dont think any woman really needs t wear make up as the beauty is on the inside.Did you wear make up when you were a Muslim. My sister who converted to islam many years ago to raise her kiss muslim with her Lebenese husband doesnt wear any as its haram. Link to comment
PtolemyGlenn
No, just a whiner. A whiner?I disagree. I care more abot my attitude and heart when I goto worship rather than if I have a tie on. There used to be a time people removed their shoes when they entered a holy ground. Now they are stomping around it in Jimmy Choos Link to comment

TAO
Mmmm... just come in your best. If you have the capability to get into what is considered typical, do it, otherwise, don't worry about it. What we care most about is that you are here =). We apologize if someone makes a rude remark to you. If I was there next to you, I'd probably have a little talking with the person who did it =p. All the same, thanks for coming =D. The Lord wants to bless you, and coming to church really helps with that =). 1 Link to comment
bluebell
This is God we are talking about. He cares more about a sincere heart than a tie. Do you agree that a sincere loving heart is better than an outward tie?You say this like these are the only two options: nice dress/insincere heart or slovenly dress/sincere heart. Have you considered that it's very possible to wear your best clothes when worshipping and reverencing God AND be sincere in that worship? And if that's possible, the next question that really matters (in regards to this thread) is "what's wrong with believing that one should dress respectfully when worshipping God sincerely?"That's what LDS believe is important about how we dress at church so if you really want to discuss how LDS are wrong in their beliefs about this, answering that question is where you need to start. Also, have you seen anyone on this thread arguing that how you dress matters MORE than how sincere you are? Has any LDS person ever tried to argue that in real life?? 3 Link to comment

Buzzard
I was feeling rebellions last Sunday, so I wore a blue shirt under my Navy pinstripe suit. It did go very well with my nice BYU pattern tie, however. And just to show what a churlish mood I was in, I didn't polish my wingtip shoes. Such a reprobate I am. 1 Link to comment
Garden Girl
Well, here in my Lincoln City, OR ward, we have 2 city police officers (the bishop used to be the Chief of Police before he retired) and these two officers come to church in full uniforms, including guns, take the sacrament, then leave to go right out on duty. One of the officers is at least 6'5" and in his uniform he makes quite an imposing figure... you can't miss him that's for sure. GG 2 Link to comment
strappinglad
Love it. That would take some folks aback, especially that hippie investigator that the missionaries are teaching. Link to comment
rpn
Notice that his quote said "could be seen as" not IS. And the handbooks specifically does NOT require any uniform for participation in passing the sacrament. You are right, the one guy sounds like he was being judgmental about your jeans. Sorry about that. Link to comment

thatjimguy
So here's some thoughts; If we want to promote the idea of unity and respect by getting members to come to church in suits and ties, what can we do as members to promote the idea? What obstacles are we facing in this regard? Are some approches we are taking to build this idea counter-productive? What idea, thoughts, or actions are hindering the process? Link to comment
Deborah
The Bible does state Do not let your adorning be external. Your braiding of hair, wearing of gold jewelery or the clothing you wear. Who said anything about wearing jewelry, etc. We are talking about taking extra steps to show God that you indeed consider him important enough to take time to dress for the occasion. You have someone in rags with a pure heart and a unrepentant sinner in their sunsay best. Whose being more sincere to God? BlueBell is right. You think it's either or when it isn't. It's a matter of letting the outer appearance match the inner man. Yes, there are hypocrites who dress in fine clothes but that doesn't change the principle that we ought to give our best when we are able. 1 Link to comment
The Nehor
I do not get why we equate uncomfortable clothes with best clothes. I don't blame the church; I blame our culture for making this a reality. We can't seem to get anything right. I mean male grooming is based a lot on Roman values like being clean shaven and short hair but try wearing a toga or skirt to church and they all stare at you..... I usually toe the line and then every so often break out the chainmail tie to mess with people. 1 Link to comment
strappinglad
OK , slightly off topic , but I have noticed that many of the young women in my ward are wearing 5 in + platform heels to church. Some have quite a time walking in them. I suppose this is the fashion of the day but it wasn't that many years ago that such footwear was reserved for .... ahhh.... Someone suggested the meme of" keep your heels and standards high" was making the rounds. Please tell me it isn't so !!! Link to comment
Damien the Leper
Jesus wouldn't attend an LDS service with close cropped hair and a suit. Does God really care? If we believe God is so petty as to be concerned with how well dressed we are then we are worshipping the wrong God. Slacks and a button down do not denote a higher esteem for reverence. Calm
I usually toe the line and then every so often break out the chainmail tie to mess with people.Isn't that rather heavy? It would look so good with a black shirt though. My husband's favourites are his Scrooge McDuck and his Winnie the Pooh ties. The kids adore the last and he gets a number of compliments from adults surprisingly....I think it just makes people feel good to see it. Edited January 22, 2014 by calmoriah Link to comment

If he doesn't care about outward appearance, why wouldn't he be as likely to show up looking like this as anything else? I know a lot of people, including myself who prefer close cropped hair for comfort and ease.Is there something inherently less desirable about short hair and suits, even if one likes them? 1 Link to comment

If that is what someone wants to wear I'm fine with that. Having a dress, hair style, code for Church meetings not so much. Clean clothes, hair, hearts and minds is probably more important to God than many a high priced suit, and haircut. Edited January 22, 2014 by thesometimesaint Link to comment
