Tacenda
There is a family in my ward that was just sick with worry about their daughter that is over there in the midst of this. But they have heard now she is safe. But from the news yesterday there have been all but one mission president/area accounted for. So I think out of 21 mission presidents, 1 hasn't been contacted, hopefully that has changed. One thing is for sure there are going to be a lot of service projects. I just hope health issues won't be a problem for the people and the missionaries over there. Is the water/food/medical supply going to be affected? I don't know how these missionary families do it. I only had one go out and he was in a stateside mission. Link to comment

BCSpace
My son is serving in the Philippines and we watched the weather that night as Haiyan moved in. The eye missed him by 150 miles and his mission president emailed us the next day saying essentially the same and that all they had experienced was much heavier than average rain. Link to comment

Buzzard
So far, no word of casualties among either the missionaries or members, but news is painfully slow getting out, and that might change, especially among the members who were unable to evacuate. Heard on the radio this morning about a family whose son is due home in a week was just contacted this morning via sat phone that he is OK. Link to comment
thesometimesaint
Estimates start at 10,000 dead in Tacloban alone. Hopefully it is just an estimate. Link to comment
Tacenda
Has anyone heard if the church is providing aid? There is usually an announcement on the news by now, that they are sending water, hygiene kits, etc. Link to comment
BCSpace
All accounted for: The Utah-based LDS Church on Monday night had accounted for the safety of all of its missionaries in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines. The church reported about 7:15 p.m. that it had made contact with all the missionaries in the 21 Philippine missions and had notified the parents of the missionaries that they were safe. As of Monday, the Utah families of Elder Gregory Baker, of Cache County, and his missionary companion Preston Hughes, of West Valley City, reported they had been notified their sons had been found alive and well. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57113453-78/missionaries-church-philippines-donate.html.csp Link to comment

thesometimesaint
What is the best method to send aid? Cash? food? Through the Church? Oxfam? Right now the best is medical and food supplies though established organizations. These organizations use the cash(check, credit card) to buy the supplies they need. Link to comment
Garden Girl
I'm sure the Church is sending aid, as well as local wards outside the affected area... bishops have ability to assist...If I was going to send a check, I'd send to Red Cross and Salvation Army (if SA is sending aid). We know the Red Cross will be involved... and of course on our tithing slips we can give an amount for Humanitarian Aid to help replenish stores/supplies the Church sends all over the world when disasters such as this strike... Calm
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865590536/LDS-Church-to-establish-relief-operations-center-in-Philippines-missionaries-to-pitch-in.html https://donate.lds.org/TNHO3ajmoEyyUA7Sb5uKkg/P/8-OQlOZ0WUupTx_12XKi_w?cid=Humanitarian-LDSnewsroom-typhoon-Haiyan-2013 Craynor said the church has enough Filipino volunteers and is not looking for volunteers to travel to the Philippines to help. In fact, earlier this week, volunteers in Cebu City had to be turned away when too many showed up to help pack survival kits. Hundreds of LDS Filipinos have been pitching in through the Mormon Helping Hands efforts and other church programs since an Oct. 15 earthquake."In addition, the Church has learned that the most effective way to respond to disasters is to work locally, purchasing needed supplies in country as near to the disaster as possible," Craynor said. "This not only ensures that the goods are appropriate for the area, but it helps build up impaired, local economies."All of the church's few thousand missionaries in the Philippines are safe, but seven of its 21 missions in the country were impacted by the typhoon. Evacuated missionaries, Craynor said, are staying in church housing near the Manila Temple and Missionary Training Center. This may have been the reason for the few days of delay of this being announced...if they need mostly cash donations because they are purchasing supplies close to the disaster, there is probably no need to instantly respond...though the sooner the better probably while people's attention are still focused on helping out. jana at jade house
We donate directly through LDS Humanitarian. They use 100 persent of the funding for aid. We like that. We like that there is already relief through our buildings andthe work of the Saints in Cebu. We haven't gotten a heads up from Humanitarian...we thought we might get an email. But it is early days yet. Money is always needed to grease the wheels of relief. Link to comment
cdowis
What is the best method to send aid? Cash? food? Through the Church? Oxfam? I gave to the humanitarian fund. I know that 100% will be used for assistance and they work closely with these other organizations to maximize their effect. Link to comment
