When You Feel Shattered

Recommended Posts

I'm sitting here feeling extremely shattered after church today. Obviously Heavenly Father is teaching me. So, I have been in prayer, and am currently listening to Handel's, "Messiah". Eventually, I will get over myself and try to process what Heavenly Father is saying.

Just wondering, what do you do when you feel "shattered".

Sometimes I go back and read journal entries about when I overcame other hard things, or when I knew Heavenly Father or my Savior knew me and loved me. Sometimes I sing the hymns and other inspirational songs. Sometimes I just go to sleep because the sun is often brighter the next day.

Your Heavenly Parents and Savior, know you, know how you are feeling today, love you, and They know you are not broken or less than or anything negative at all.

Immobile. Take an "I'm waiting" attitude? What else can you do?...

Presumably this is not based on knowledge that has made a formal difference in your way of life. To feel shattered would be the correct response on certain occasions, or if one is unwilling to sumbit to the will of God. Of course I am not saying that this is the case. But it is truly a gift of God that we cannot be truly happy apart from peace with Him. Feelings are another story altogether even though they seem similar; they feel similar. What follows does not apply to truly and objectively stressful or difficult circumstances. It is sometimes rational to feel low.

I am talking about fleeting feelings. Different temperaments are subject to different failings. I can tend to irrational depression myself. Whether we are experiencing such highs or lows, it is important to objectively note that these are temporary and somewhat unpredictable. It is actually easier to do with lows, but it is just as important with the highs. Why? Because we shouldn't expect high or low feelings to be normal. We will always have to work our way through the lows and avoid pursuing the highs.

True spiritual joy, as opposed to mere good feelings, lies only in knowing that we are at peace with God, in submission to His good will for us. Mourning or grieving will be the sad and occasionally rational response of the soul that still retains spiritual joy in this "valley of tears", who amidst all the pains says with our Lord, "Not My will, but Thine be done."

Pick up the pieces, and move on.

I think back on how merciful and good God has been to me from the ealiest moments of my life, watching over me all along and keeping me alive with the light of the Gospel constantly extended to me, no matter how bad I think I've had it. I count my blessings. I live one day at a time, taking every opportunity to be of some kind of servie to someone.

Why do you feel "shattered" after attending Church?

It was odd and unusual, having come to the church feeling really happy and sunny. The first speaker talked about the handcart pioneers, and I felt a great deal of empathy for them, but was still OK, then the next speaker delved into his personal struggles, nearly losing his composure at times. It so moved me for one because I know that the outcome of his struggles will be if he makes certain choices. It really grieved me.
