Yes, but it was awhile back. I checked it out at the library here in Utah. The author, James Farrell, lives in my stake. I've been lucky enough to have sat in some classes he has taught. So I definitely love the book, I don't retain information well, so I wish my post were more helpful. I believe it has the scenario of a modern day guy and his family and how he changes some bad behaviour towards them. Now I'll have to go read some info to see if I'm correct. But I believe it was a bestseller, not only in LDS circles, if memory serves me right. ETA: I went to amazon to check out the book for any reviews and what they say, and stumbled on another book he's written called "The Holy Secret". Here is a review of that book. I just may have to look into getting it! Here is the review for it.... "This book was chosen as this months literacy selection for my church. I found it breathtaking in scope for such a small book. Why don't they teach this in sunday school? Why aren't we learning to view the scriptures in this way? We are told to "search" the scriptures, but what does that really mean?

James Ferrell gently tells us; how many of us are missing the point in our own supposed holiness, and are, infact, rejecting what we should be embracing in our search for the divine. His insights into the scriptures are both deep and satisfying.

Although the story is in a fictional setting, the relevance transcends the fiction into a very personal realm. The instruction and guidence on scripture study is compelling and priceless. A wonderful lesson in "Be thou humble", and opening your life to the Spirit, your family, and your fellow man." My enter button isn't working just as someone else has mentioned on Social Discussions.....help, this will probably not look so good, sorry.

No worries, and thank you for your input! So would it be correct to say that it's a novel that teaches principles based set in a family in trouble situation? Is it purely narrative, or is there instructional writing in there too? I'm just concerned that if it's the wrong 'story' I wouldn't be able to relate to it and transpose the principles into my life. x

Go to Amazon and read the reviews, there are tons of them. One I read said it will go back and forth and compare the scriptures and relate them to your life. Apparently it relates to several people and their life "stories". If you have a library card I'd go that route then you're not out the money. But in the reviews it had some people that were saying they loved the book so much they wanted to buy books for family and friends. Hope this helps.

This isn't quite an instructional book, more fiction than real. It only has 201 pages. Again, if you go to Amazon, you'll see the table of contents and the epilogue etc. It gives you a good idea of how instructional it will be. Also, you can buy used also on Amazon. For pennies compared to Deseret Bookstore, which is over priced to begin with.

http://sethadamsmith...-james-ferrell/ Here are some videos of James Farrell speaking, he is such a good speaker and has some good advice. I'll never forget his talk in a stake conference once. He told us that we should admit our sins to others. In other words not portray ourselves as perfect all the time. But one bad thing or good, depending on how you look at it, the next Sunday or so a gentlemen in our ward was giving a talk and he mentioned this talk by Farrell. And then proceeded to admitting that at one time he struggled with porn addiction. This guy is a TR holder, family man, opposite of the guy you'd think would look at porn. So maybe he took it a little far and maybe Farrell didn't mean to tell it all openly. Who knows, but I do look at this fellow a little differently now, I don't judge him, but realize he is imperfect like all of us, and more human now than I'd ever pictured before. I know I tend to put on a perfect showing of myself and don't always put myself out there as who I truly am. ETA: also, click on the "click on here" for a talk he gave that has a more LDS bend. I think you'll enjoy it. Edited by Tacenda
