New Lds Member Returns To Calvery Chapel

Recommended Posts

Recently we had the spanish Elders over for lunch and thaey shared with me a recently Baptized member who was exited to take the lessons, got baptized and could not wait to go on a mission but his Calvery Chapel Christian friends have been talking with him and he has been going back to his Calvery Chapel church and told the Elders that the Calvery Chapel members understand him better than the LDS members. The Elders are trying to set up a visit for him to come to my [or his] home to talk. My friend David C. Pyle. has a web page containing some material on Calvery Chapel and it is archived somewhere [ I think it may be on Jeff Lindsay's site]. I have a # of Calvery Chapel friends from the past and present. Any help with finding the above site would be appreciated.

Be sure not to approach it as a 'bash Calvary Chapel' session. I would suggest just using the site for understanding of his possible beliefs. But it may be more just a sense of attachments to his friends at his old faith where his friendships with the members of his ward haven't developed to that depth yet.

Is he a Spanish speaker and is he going to a Spanish ward or an English one? His comfort level with the language could make a difference as well.

Yeah the CC were strong and very anti-Mormon back in Indiana we need to avoid behaving like they do.

I would be surprised if you were to do otherwise, but I know sometimes when we think we understand the others' POV and believe that POV is wrong that sometimes we are tempted to focus on what is wrong more than what is right, perhaps because we think it will be easier for them to understand the right if we remove that misunderstanding first. In many areas this actually works well or is even essential (such as teaching math, it is very important to clear away misunderstandings so as they don't continue to use them to interpret; also in cases of bigotry and stereotyping that impedes how people see each other) and in many ways it is important to do so when teaching out our own faith---we need to clear away the misconceptions about our own faith...but it becomes a fine line when we start to deal with people's misconceptions that are based on their own personal beliefs as defensiveness, sense of identity and other factors come into play.

I really didn't mean to suggest you would engage in any bashing, but just meant to point out caution even in small ways when it comes to dealing with others' beliefs...especially if there are youth involved that haven't yet learnt respect for others' beliefs due to lack of experience (iow, I am more concerned about the missionaries than you and hope that you will be able to pass on your wisdom and experience to help them become better representatives of our faith as well as better teachers).

Actually Chuck Smith and his Calvary Chapelites do a good deal of Mormon bashing both on and off their radio network. Within the very widespread Calvary Chapel movement all is not sweetness and light, and there have been some major contratemps. Here is an example:

David Sessions, “Calvary Chapel’s Tangled Web,” The Daily Beast, Jan 27, 2013, online at http://www.thedailyb...angled-web.html (3 pages)

For the history of Calvary Chapel, see http://en.wikipedia..../Calvary_Chapel

However, for the hidden backstory, see also http://www.has.vcu.e...iles/Shiloh.htm (Shiloh was the largest Jesus Freak movement in history and it began at Calvary Chapel)

Calvary Chapel's own website is here http://www.calvarychapel.com/
