Andy_T Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 This is a matter that has caused much debate amongst some of my friends!
thesometimesaint Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I take it as an article of faith that there is life on other planets, but I have no science to back that up.
Andy_T Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Well, some of my more conservative friends and family have said that this planet is the chosen one, and this one only. To them, it's a scriptural and unquestionable truth. To suggest that there is life elsewhere robs us of our unique status.
Gillebre Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Andy, check out this article from the New Era: http://www.lds.org/new-era/1971/04/people-on-other-worldsYou and your friends/family should definitely read it.
teddyaware Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 "For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God." Doctrine and Covenants 76:23-24 3
Garden Girl Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 "For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God." Doctrine and Covenants 76:23-24And what is the scripture? Worlds without number have I created... (plural) They are as the sands of the sea...And D&C 76:39: For all the rest shall be brought forth in the resurrection of the dead, through the triumph and the glory of the Lamb, who was slain, who was in the bosom of the Father before the worlds were made.""Do people really believe that in this vast universe we are the only inhabited planet? What would be the purpose of creating worlds if they were not to be inhabited. There's another scripture that refers to one world ending and another coming forth... in a continuing process of creation...GG
DarkScythe Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Aliens, no matter how freaky they can be, will not effect my belief in God or the Church.

Calm Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I take it as a given there is life on other planets, both due to scriptures and scientific probabilities. Now the more important question is how close in resemblance to humans is that life.
altersteve Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Doctrine aside, I think from an entirely logical perspective, the idea that there is no life anywhere except on this little planet is beyond absurd to me. 2
rodheadlee Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I take it as a given there is life on other planets, both due to scriptures and scientific probabilities. Now the more important question is how close in resemblance to humans is that life.I like to think they look like us, in the image of God. Of course there could be just plant, animal or molecular life and no intelligent beings.
cursor Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Considering the very minimal amount of information that we really have about the celestial heavens ... coupled with what we DO know about the extent of the universe, I don't think that there is any question that [very] intelligent life exists elsewhere, in whatever form.
DarkScythe Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 what about the Lion humanoid singing praises to God.
DH Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Well, God lives on another planet, so yes, I believe in extraterrestrial life.
ERayR Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I take it as a given there is life on other planets, both due to scriptures and scientific probabilities. Now the more important question is how close in resemblance to humans is that life.I would say there could be some variance but would be roughly humanoid. That is if they are all children of God.
ERayR Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I like to think they look like us, in the image of God. Of course there could be just plant, animal or molecular life and no intelligent beings. He my friend there are some really weird looking humans so it would take much variation for them to still look like us and still be weird.
rodheadlee Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 He my friend there are some really weird looking humans so it would take much variation for them to still look like us and still be weird.Yes, I'm reading a set of novels by Jack McDevitt where the other interstellar races are humanoid with feline features or avian features.. I'm open to anything but I still think they will resemble your basic Terran. 1
thesometimesaint Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 The human form is essentially that of a standing ape. There are lots of advantages to standing, but we pay a heavy price for that ability to stand.
ERayR Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 The human form is essentially that of a standing ape. There are lots of advantages to standing, but we pay a heavy price for that ability to stand.Apes are known to be great at aping. 1
Freedom Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I think that saying 'very very likely' is too weak an affirmation. I would be shocked and amazed if it turned out there was only life on this planet. I believe it is fundamental to LDS believes to have life on other planets. And I am certain that they are not caucasians. I would not even be surprised if they looked more like a creature you see on startrek. 1
Calm Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) I would not even be surprised if they looked more like a creature you see on startrek. That wouldn't be too hard since they tended to be just variations on the "nose of the week" aliens. Now Star Wars...they tried to go for a much more varied look.I am being too harsh about Star Trek....let's not forget they tended to throw in a forehead prosthetic and fancy ear from time to time. Calm Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Oh, I am a fan....just a few things bothered me....and considering what they had to work with, I thought the nose of the week was an intelligent compromise...especially when Next Generation explained the prevalence of humanoid species through in the episode about the Founders (or whatever they called them) that were humanoid and had spread their DNA through the galaxy to spawn other humanoid races.I did get really tired of writers resorting to new technical gadgets to get out of the episode's crisis....especially if you never heard of them again even when they might have come in very handy.
