"Sustaining Moderate Islam"

Sounds like a very interesting symposium. I will try to make it.

I've really wondered why the "moderate" Islamic world has allowed the radical fringe to completely dominate the discourse between Islam and the West. I'm convinced that the vast majority of Muslims go about their lives like ordinary people. Raising their families, praying for security and peace, etc. We seldom see this side of Islam here in the American media.

This is not the case. "Moderate" Islam is a very small percentage of the overall religion that has been recently Westernized by scholars most Islam doesn't agree with. More than 80% of Muslims accept Sharia law for example and there aren't any "moderate" interpretations of it accepted by more than this same tiny percentage. There IS a difference between the radical fringe and the rest of the majority, but that difference is merely between death and slavery.

You are out of the thread.

This would be a good question to ask at the symposium. But I don't know if you will get a good answer. It seems that fear is one reason moderates do not condemn the extremists in the way that it should be done.

Anybody in the area is welcome to attend the symposium and listen to people who actually know about Islam.

That is great. Sorry that I cannot attend; I am in Abu Dhabi and will not be in the states for a couple months. However, it would be wonderful if those who think they know something about Islam would attend. It is far too evident that most Americans know nothing about Islam except the sound bites they hear on the TV. Worse, they understand it even less.

As someone who lives among Muslims, I would rather live among faithful people of any religion rather than the lukewarm examples we see far too often in all religions.

I'm happy to see any intersection between Muslims and Mormons. There should be dialogue between the two religions, considering how much historically they have in common. We have something they want, acceptance by a potentially empathetic branch of Christianity, and they have something we want, the keys to missionary access.

Thanks Dan. I would go if I lived closer to Utah.

On a related issue, I've been trying for some time now to find a way to get my kids to interact with muslim children so they can understand the faith and people. Unfortunately, I have failed to find any resources where we live. I've researched local islamic congregation's websites and that of CAIR's Ohio affiliate, but have not found any opportunties. As someone who has interacted a lot with moderate muslims, do you have any suggestions?

Definitions of faithful are varied and are prone to disagreements in Islam. Much depends on interpretations of the Koran. The Taliban claim to be faithful. Would you mind living among them? Also, moderates in Islam may be considered lukewarm to some muslims.

I have read two of Karen Armstrong's book on Islam and listening to her on ForaTV. What is her standing in the world of Islamic studies?
