They come across to me as a series of highly choreographed fight scenes with enough plot to justify their existence. I thought Strange would be fun because it would get into the mystical, but they pretty much destroyed my expectations in the first film, first having him injured for an absolutely stupid reason (what kind of doctor would trust he’d be able to give X-rays the attention they deserve especially if complicated case like it was supposed to be while driving even at 20 mph?) and second, Swinton as the Ancient One (love her, but casting a European as the ultimate mystic when the main lead is also European is insulting; the original from the comics was born in the Himalayas). This is why I don't like any of the super hero movies other than the Guardians of the Galaxy ones--they are just really long fight scenes but you know exactly how it's all going to end and who will win, 20 minutes before the final fight scene is over. 1 Link to comment
Saint Bonaventure
Of late, I'm watching some campy 70s sci-fi: Logan's Run (the TV show) The Starlost Genesis II Planet Earth Strange New World 1 Link to comment
Amulek
Watched Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness this past weekend. As far as Marvel movies go, I would give it a 6-7 out of 10. There were a few things that I really liked about it: (1) it's probably the closest we'll ever get to a Marvel horror film; I really would have liked to see what Sam Raimi could have done with this film if it weren't a cog in a multi-billion dollar machine - I think it could have been a home run; (2) I've been a Danny Elfman fan for a long time, and I really liked what he did with the score; without giving anything away, there is one scene towards the end of the film where music plays a big part in the action, and I really enjoyed getting to experience that in the Dolby Theater we were at (good luck getting my wife to ever let me get those kind of speakers in our home). On the flip side, all of the usual Marvel caveats apply. Much of the potential highs are capped in service of maintaining the greater franchise. You also have to sit through a certain amount of cross-over setup stuff that isn't really necessary for the film. Don't get me wrong, I love me some [spoiler alert] Patrick Stewart, and I look forward to seeing if / when some of these other properties end up making it back to the big screen, but I really don't need to have them crammed into every single film, but that's part of the non-stop money machine so I get it. I was also really disappointed that, aside from one or two particular scenes, there was such a bit visual backslide from what we got to see in the first Doctor Strange movie. Hopefully that's something which will be remedied in future installments. Overall though, I thought the movie was enjoyable - I just wish it had been better. 1 Link to comment
bluebell
I noticed that The Lost City was included for free in my Paramount subscription so hubby and I watched it (I only have Paramount so I can watch Star Trek but it's the cheapy option with commercials so I was very pleasantly surprised that a practically new movie for free was a perk). Anyway, pros: It was campy fun. There were some legitimately funny parts. The actors were all great in their parts. Fairly entertaining. I love how they handled male and female gender roles in the movie. The movie isn't try to preach anything, and they make fun of a lot of cultural stuff, but they still managed to make the characters real and fleshed out even in such a silly story. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was fun as a bad guy. Cons: To much sexual stuff. Watching with my husband it was fine but I wouldn't want to watch it with my kids or my parents. That would be awkward Channing Tatum was great in his role, and I loved that his love interest was a woman "his age", but Sandra Bullock is pushing 60 and it's starting to show. She's gorgeous but looks like she's had some (very minor) work done, so her facial age doesn't always match her body age and that's a little wonky sometimes to watch on the screen. That Channing Tatum is quite a bit younger than her, and looks it. This made the love story both sweet but also kind of weird. The movie was kind of predictable in spots and I was starting to get bored near the end. Luckily though, it was almost over by then so I powered through. 2 Link to comment

Chum
I'm wondering what the backstory is behind the Time Traveler's Wife. My guess is 4-chan has been sending anonymous scripts to the The Hallmark Channel - who finally produced one of them. Super buff male lead is naked a lot (no fruit), in case that sells it for anyone. 1 Link to comment

I’ve been reading the reviews and so far everyone hates that series. I thought the movie was pretty entertaining, but wasn’t that fond of the book. Though the “grooming” accusations are just dumb. He materialized out of sight in the brush. Asks for and gets clothes then comes out. He doesn't let on they're together one day. During the conversation she asks why he'd want to kiss someone and he says it's nice - like her brushing her toy pony right then is nice. She says "I'm not brushing him! I'm grooming him." So that. That aside, it was nice to not have my haunches up during this scene. Or at least not much. I realized I miss the time when abuse wasn't an automatic subplot. Especially since when he meets little girl Claire he’s already been married to adult Claire for years. He doesn’t meet Claire for the first time until she’s in her 20’s. 1 Link to comment
Calm
And according to reviews he vomits a lot. That is the antithesis of grooming in my view, lol. I assume the naked time traveling is essential to the plot. Does he always appear by her or does he show up in other places around other people? 1 Link to comment

He time travels against his will but his clothes don’t go with him. So he always shows up naked. And he goes to the same places over and over sometimes (not all the time). A wooded area near her house is one of the places he spontaneously goes often. 2 Link to comment
bluebell
Watched Dog last night. It has a belgian malinois and Channing Tatum as the leads. It was really well done and very entertaining. Pretty funny in parts. The only annoying part was one scene that involved the character trying to have sex with two women who claim to heal people's energy so that they can have better sex. No nudity (or even kissing) and no language, but that scene could be awkward if watching it with kids. It was touching, and highlights the issues that dogs in the military develop when they serve (issues very similar to what the men and women develop being in combat), but it has a happy ending. 1 Link to comment
Amulek
Morbius. Definitely south of meh. On the bright side (1) I didn't have to pay for it; and (2) my brother-in-law who did pay for it agreed that it was a crummy movie, so we are still able to be friends. 2 Link to comment

And Tom had them trained well enough that they were able to do what they did. https://abc7.com/top-gun-maverick-tom-cruise-training-airplane/11910216/ Link to comment

I think one of the reasons people are responding to it so much is the lack of CGI. 2 Link to comment

We watched this over the weekend as well (at the good theater). My wife really enjoyed it. I felt it was a bit of a remakequel myself, but I thought they did a great job with the film. These long delayed returns to popular IPs sometimes miss the mark big time - yes, I'm looking at you Independence Day 2 - so I'm really glad that didn't happen here. 2 Link to comment

Independance day was so bad, I prefer to pretend like it doesn't exist. I've heard the new Matrix missed the mark as well, but I haven't seen it. There is a big demand for Gen X nostalgia right now but not many sequels are doing the stories justice. I think what made this one so good (to me) was that it stayed true to its roots and didn't try to get all fancy with CGI action. It actually had characters and a story and wasn't just a collection of multiple action sequences with a lot of CGI impossible stuff with a little talking in between, that went on for 2 hours. I'm pretty sure that's what we are going to get with the last Jurassic World movie, if the preview was any indication. 3 Link to comment

bluebell
Not a movie, but has anyone watched the newest season of Stranger Things? I'm just starting it but I'm apprehensive. I loved the last few seasons and they'd better not ruin this one! **Please no spoilers** Link to comment
Pyreaux
Top Gun: Maverick... its cool, Tom Cruise gets a little Mission Impossible at the end, there are like 3 near-death moments followed by high risk back up plan to recover before the next one happens. Val Kilmer is in it, he has a hard time speaking. I saw a teaser trailer of his documentary, had had a voice box in that... poor man. Did you know he was going to play Joseph Smith in Richard Dutcher's film entitled Prophet: The Story of Joseph Smith before Richard Dutcher went on his middle life crisis journey to find himself. I've also been watching these short films on Youtube - The Mandela Catalogue... 👤 Analog Horror, no real jump scares, cool but complicated concepts... you don't get scared watching it, you just scare yourself thinking about it and when alone in the dark. 1 Link to comment
