Sounds pretty nice. No paper on the Yggdrasil or Irminsul though?

Sigh. I've been working on a paper all summer on the Tree of Life, but from the contents listed here, I see that many of my thoughts have already been addressed by fellow LDS.

... wait a second, that's great news, not a reason to sigh! Maybe it's just my own absorption in the material, but I feel like we're on the cusp of Big Things regarding the Tree of Life. (Anyone Mormon who hasn't seen Terrence Malick's new flick really out to do themselves a favor and check it out, for instance.) And ohman, I am coveting this book. Thanks for the heads up! :)

Love it.

Since a video precedent has been set (*grin*), I'ma plug Terrence Malick's Tree of Life again. The critics are utterly divided, and it is definitely an artsy, impressionistic, languidly-paced movie; if breathy, dramatic voice-overs ain't your thing, steer clear. But what I appreciate is Malick's utterly unrelenting sincerity. He simply does not care about the cheap nihilistic cynicism which has too often been confused with rigorous intellectual skepticism. It's rapidly edging into my Best Movie Evar slot.

As far as I'm aware, Malick ain't LDS, but I think this might be the most Mormon movie ever made. Beginning with a quote from Job, he essentially shows us the perspective of the Council in Heaven, watching the Creation, Falling to earth, questioning and hoping for things unseen during our Mortal Probation, and being reborn in a decidedly physical Resurrection, all in the context of an achingly tender humanism which never loses sight of the fact that we are all part of the same divine family.

I think this might be one of the most truthful movies ever made, and especially relevant to Mormons - Daniel C. Peterson's article 'Nephi and his Asherah,' which talks about the symbolism of the Tree of Life as representative of, among other things, our Mother in Heaven, can be very usefully applied while watching the movie: http://maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/publications/books/?bookid=13&chapid=94
