No Respect Of Persons

Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

A simple interpretation of this scripture is All men are under the same law. If you disagree, please explain.

When Gordon B. Hinckley was interviewed by Larry King, he was asked about polygamy.

LK: First tell me about the church and polygamy. When it started it allowed it?

GBH: When our people came west they permitted it on a restricted scale.

LK: You could have a certain amount of...

GBH: The figures I have are from -- between two percent and five percent of our people were involved in it. It was a very limited practice; carefully safeguarded.

Is Hinckley saying that not everybody was allowed to practice plural marriage? If so, would that not mean that not all men were under the same law?

No.

It means that not everyone met the requirements. It does not mean the requirements weren't the same for everyone.

I think it means we are ultimately judged by the same standards. Obviously, not everyone lived in mortality under the same law. For example, some lived under the law of Moses and others did not. So I don't think that some being allowed/required to practice plural marriage and others not is a problem.

However, consider the fact that the Gospel will be preached in the afterlife. One of the reasons for this seems to be so that all can be judged by the same standard (1 Peter 4:6). I daresay everyone will be asked to accept the principle plural marriage, as instituted by God, whether or not they actually practice it themselves. The extent of one's acceptance of such will certianly play a role in what kind of resurrection one attains.

So yes, I think ultimately everyone will be asked to accept and believe all the same things and perhaps even to practice them if necessary.

"Respect of persons" means that God doesn't discriminate between individuals. He doesn't have any favourites. Whoever keeps God's commandments is approved, and whoever does not is not.

Practising polygamy was voluntary. Those who didn't practice it were for the most part people who didn't have the desire or the inclination to. I am not familiar with the detailed history of it, and I am not sure how it would have been "safeguarded;" but I suppose it would have been like qualifying for a temple recommend. Since it was a principle that could have been abused, only those judged worthy would have had their requests granted.

Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

This scriptures is in reference to Acts 10:34. When Peter converted the first Gentile Cornelius, and the Holy Ghost fell upon him, Peter couldn't believe it. Israel only had the right to the gospel and Holy Ghost. Christ said to preach the gospel among the Gentiles. Peter then exclaimed " I perceive that God is no respecter of persons". Meaning the gospel has opened up to all the people(Gentiles) not just Israel.

I don't think all church members even knew about polygamy. Joseph Smith did not have his wives (except Emma) living under his roof, not as "official wives" anyway. He also declared in public that he had only one wife when he had more.

I don't think the church treats all members as equal under the law. Look at Marriott, who sold porn and alcohol in his hotels. Was he ever excommunicated or even counselled?

You sound like you have a large chip on your shoulder. I suggest you calm down a bit, or you won't survive here very long.

In fact some of the wives were living with Joseph and Emma at various times. And they were official wives in the eyes of God.

He also declared in public that he had only one wife when he had more.

And Germans who were hiding Jews in their attics told the soldiers there were no Jews in their attics because their lives as well as those they were hiding would have been in danger.

I think it is obvious that the verses refer to gentile and Jew. A righteous Jew or a righteous gentile is still righteous, an evil Jew or evil gentile is still evil. But God will judge everyone by their own life and their own experiences. If they were taught bad doctrine then the teacher will be held accountable and not the student. The blind Jews will be judged by works and faith according to the teachings of Abraham and Moses. We will not be judged all the same. To do so would not be justice and justice will be carried out and those who need to pay will pay to the last penny.
