It is the same word for "breath." It also means "life." By resemblance to breath and air in motion, it means "spirit." That’s where we get the translation, and the Hebrew word contains all those different meanings. If we just leave it with our English word "spirit," we’re not getting the full attributes of what the Bible is trying to describe. It’s trying to describe that there’s a breath involved. Also consider, Genesis 2:7 "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." We also know about spiritual death through latter-day revelation. Since the Fall, mankind has been separated spiritually from our Heavenly Father. We need to be "re-born" spiritually through receiving the Holy Ghost. Consider, John 20:22 "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:" Jesus breathed the Spirit onto His disciples, just as He or HF did into Adam in Genesis 2:7. Rob Osborn Posted May 12, 2011 Share Posted May 12, 2011 We must get one fact clear. Children born into mortality are alive in Christ. This means they are spiritually alive. Children are not born spiritually dead. We become spiritually dead when we begin to grow up and choose evil works over good. We then become dead to good works. Spiritual death only happens to sinners and thus as logic stands- the only ones needing a spiritual rebirth through baptism are those who are sinners and in need of repentance. Little children cannot repent for there is no sin and thus no spiritual death. Link to comment
