There are few reasons for a fuel station to be open on the Sabbath, becuase people can buy gasoline and Diesel fuel on Saturday as easily as on Sunday.
Well, I, for one, am really glad that fuel stations are open on Sunday... I am a member of the District RS Presidency, and have to do a great deal of traveling on Sundays... I do gas up my car on Saturday night, but my District is spread out over a very large area...
The nearest Branch that I visit is 1.5 hours drive away (one way)... I have 2 Branches that are 2 hours away... 4 Branches that are 2.5 to 3 hours away... 1 that is 4 hours drive away and 1 that is 5.5 hours away... This requires a lot of gasoline!!
I do try to split up my trips (especially that 5.5 hour one!!) by going down on Saturday night and staying with another member of the District RS Presidency, but that is not always fesible... I have 3 sons who live at home, and are involved in a myriad of activities... Some of which occur on Saturday... I, as a single parent, try to attend as many of these activites as I can!!
So, sometimes I get up at 4:00 AM, on Sunday morning, to hit the road by 5:00 AM in order to get to the Branch by 9:30 AM... And, then I have to drive back the same day!! And sometimes, I run low on gas... And, I stop at the gas station to fuel up... I have no other choice, other than to not go and visit the Saints in the outlying areas... Which I refuse to do, since the Spirit (and the District President) have asked me to go!!
I do make this concession though... If I do have to purchase fuel to get home, I pay via debit card, at the pump, and do not enter the store or purchase snacks... I take all my food and drinks with me in a cooler...
I am trying to live the spirit of the law, even if I cannot quite live the letter of the law!! My District President doesn't seem to have a problem with it... And, if the Lord does, he has not made it known unto me...
Just some thoughts!!

Deborah...
It was just minutes ago that you wrote... That is where you implied that you never received any spiritual direction from the Lord.
And from the way your attitude comes across in your posts, I believe you.
I have been watching this conversation with interest, and Deborah did not imply that she has NEVER recieved any Spiritual direction from the Lord... Not at all!!
She simply stated that she KNOWS where the Prophet and the 12 get their inspiration... It is next to improssible to know where some random person who chooses to post on an online forum gets their inspiration... The people who post here are often nameless avatars on a screen...
That is why we are taught to follow the 1st Presidency and the 12... Of course we are supposed to listen for the discerning voice of the Spirit to guide us!! Of course we are supposed to study it out in our minds and hearts and prayers...
No where, in all of Deborah's posts did she suggest that we are supposed to blindly give up our Agency and follow these men with no thoughts of our own... And at no time are we to substitute their judgement for our own, and ignore the promptings of the Spirit...
For you to suggest that she implied that we should do so is just... Well, it is very sad...

Hmm..If the Holy Ghost were to tell me to raise my hand in the negative, I'd question it. There's no reason for the Holy Ghost to reveal to me that the person shouldn't have the calling and yet, not reveal this to the church leaders who've called the person.
I don't think this holds true in every situation... I know of a man who was called to be a member of the Branch Presidency... The District and Mission Presidents had no idea this man was not worthy to hold the calling... They both prayed about the calling and felt it was right to proceed...
The call was issued, the man was sustained, and he served for 2 years before it was revealved that he had a MAJOR worthiness issue (which resulted in criminal charges)...
It is my very firmly held belief that the truth of this matter was not revealed to the District and Mission Presidents, because this was an oppertunity for the man to admit his sin and say, "Hey, sorry... I can't accept the calling and here is why..." He could have begun the repentance process 2 years earlier, and confessed, rather than being "found out"...
He did not... Much to his damnation...And, he has to live with that for the rest of his life!!
So, I do not think we should refuse to sustain a person on a whim, or because we do not like them... But, just because someone is being called, does not mean that they are worthy, and we should ignore promptings we might feel...

I am sitting here getting ready to take my Son to the Airport. He will go to the MTC (if his flight is not cancelled) without any of his white shirts. The snowstorm that hit us Saturday has crippled everything including the cleaners that have his shirts. He leaves to early in the morning to get them. So we will have to mail them out. Also the entire family was supposed to get together tonight
