  1. Almost everything at grocery store has "gluten free" in big letters on things that never had gluten.  My popcorn says gluten free on box and "100% whole grain".  Anyone know of any popcorn that uses only part if corn kernal or uses gluten filler?  This craziness.

I think that's nature. If we sense that our children have a very good likelihood of survival, we tend to have fewer children and invest more in each child. If we live in a very poor environment, we are more likely to have more children and hope that a few of them survive.

Elizabeth Gregory, director of the women's gender and sexuality studies program at the University of Houston:

"For each year of delay a college graduate makes, she will be likely to earn more. "On average, her long-term salary will increase, so over her career her salary will be twice what it would have been if she'd started at 22. [She can expect] about a 12 percent gain in long-term salary per year [of delaying pregnancy]," she said.

"For kids getting more mature and more educated parents, there are demonstrable outcomes, such as living at a higher economic level," she said.

And obviously starting family later means you will have fewer kids.  Maybe 2 but not 3 unless you have loads of money for expensive fertility treatment.

  3. "For the last four decades, women, on average, have been having first babies later in life than ever before. In 2012, the latest year for which data are available, there were more than nine times as many first births to women 35 and older than there were 40 years ago. Among younger women -- those under 30, and, particularly, those under 20 years old -- first births have actually declined."

"After 34, your chances of getting pregnant  spontaneously, without the help of reproductive endocrinology or fertility services, exponentially decline," said Dr. Catherine Herway, assistant director of maternal-fetal medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, in New York City.

or that women aren't able to have as many babies as those in earlier decades?

Actually there is some of that going on.  Couples delay having children to advance careers.  Then trying to conceive first child in mid thirties becomes more difficult.  Why so many couples seek fertility treatment when they can't get pregnant.

Her culture said she was only useful in the home, kitchen, and laundry room.   Her God said otherwise.

I don't know where you get that idea of women in Jewish culture.  Read Prov 28:10-28 and see what women are doing, way beyond mere household duties.

"She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant."

"She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard."

"She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands."

"She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff."

  6. I disagree that she was a nothing, useful only as a slave.  She was humble, deeply spiritual, selected above all women to bear and raise the Only Begotten Son.  A special chosen vessel.  One with a special temperament to raise a child in righteousness, teaching the scriptures and how to pray.  How to love all people.  Christ wasn't born with all those qualities.  Compassion, teaching  Him who He really is and His mission on earth.  No other mother on earth has been called to do such an important work.

Her cousin, Elizabeth, who bore and raised John the Baptist in her old age, was married to a Levite who performed priestly duties in the temple. These two women were not from ordinary families. Two deeply spiritual women selected to raise two babies to do the most important work on earth.  The forerunner of the gospel and our Savior had extraordinary mothers.

  7. The scriptures are a blank page when it comes to Mary's parents.  We know nothing about her family circumstances.

I wouldn't say Joseph & Mary lived "comfortably."  At the time of His birth, they were on the journey to Bethlehem ordered by Caesar Augustus.  The three wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Joseph was told to flee to Egypt with Mary and child because King Herod's order to kill all male infants under 2 years of age.  They did not return to Nazareth until death if Herod.  Not sure how long they were refugees in Egypt.  The gifts brought by 3 wise men were probably used to support them.  Joseph may have been able  to get some work as a carpenter in Egypt.  Finances probably got better on return to Nazareth.  Joseph had sons from previous marriage who probably helped out in carpenter shop.

Has anyone said what started the fires?

There is a strong evidence that Camp Fire in NorCal was caused by PG&E power.  They had one high voltage line downed by high winds.  Station noted a break in flow at main station so sent out employees immediately to inspect.  They found a 10 acre fire with downed power line in the thick of it.  The time the high voltage wire was detected as down was 10 minutes before small fire was discovered. The fire was totally inaccessible down in a deep ravine.  With high winds, this little 10 acre fire became the conflagration that destroyed entire town of Paradise and two small neighboring unincorporated towns.

PG&E has a policy to shut down all power in high wind situations.  They sent out 22 alerts in the preceeding 24 hours to all customers warning them power may be cut to prevent downed power lines.  (Customers really hate having power cut for day or two.)  So despite 22 warnings, PG&E never flipped the switch.  The devastation could have been prevented if PG&E had followed their policy.

PG&E are already on the hook for billions from fire earlier this year in Santa Rosa.  They reported to SEC the day after fire destroyed Paradise that they did not have resources to cover additional claims from Camp Fire.

The Wooley Fire in SoCal was also likely caused by downed PG&E power line.

PG&E has been implicated in 5 major wildfires in past two years.

  9. In my ward, mostly women share testimony even though fairly equal number of males/females in membership.  We have mostly families with very few retirees.  Children far outnumber adults. In fact, so many adults are needed in Primary that usually only a dozen in SS and half dozen in RS. (A number of adults serve in Stake callings so not present about one Sunday a month for Ward/Branch Conferences. We only have 5 wards and 8 branches in Stake). It is more likely for a YW to share testimony than YM (YM rarely do).  We even have primary children (age 7+) on occasion and they are impressive.  Not some memorized phrases learned in Primary but well-thought out inspiring presentations.  Once in a while a misguided parent (usually mother) will bring a toddler to the pulpit to share a testimony usually parroting what is whispered in toddler's ear. Few can understand the gibberish but Mom is soooo proud.

I haven't noticed any women prefacing their comments with "I just want to say."  Maybe it's a cultural thing to region you live.  About half of the adults are native to this nonMormon state (maybe 2nd/3rd generation members) and half are what we call "imports" from Mormon Country. SS teachers are equally male/female.

We do have a few specific male attendees 🤓 in SS who always have a number of comments and present as an expert on every topic (a bit annoying).  Maybe those are imports from your ward. 😉

  10. I heard one lecturer at a medical conference who explained the seemingly common description of seeing bright light.  His opinion was that the electrical activity in the brain explains the  phenomenon.  A person being resuscitated usually hasn't been without heart beat or breath long enough to stop synaptic brain activity.  If electrical brain activity is still functioning, impressions and sensations are formed in memory.  The interpretation of what is stored in memory occurs in consciousness, influenced by the subconscious.  The interpretation is always influenced by knowledge/beliefs/prior memories/emotions, conscious and subconscious.

I do not believe in visitations, heavenly messages or visions in NDE.  If a person has prior religious/spiritual memories, the interpretation will usually focus on that.

People with any length of deep coma after resuscitation rarely report memories of NDE upon awakening.  Patients resuscitated on surgical operating table do not have NDE memories.  The drugs/gasses have them in a state that no sensations or impressions are stored in accessible memory to be interpreted.

  11. If you study the history of KJV translation, you will find that it is based on a previous translation "The Bishop's Bible" in 1568 authorized by Church of England.  The scholars doing the translation were biased by Church of England doctrine so words and phrases were translated to meet doctrine.  KJV was not a total retranslation so Church of England doctrine still permeates KJV.  Thus "as far as it is translated correctly" caveat.

I think one of the reasons KJV is chosen as authorized version (Note JS version from KJV) has a lot to do with copyright laws of the more recent translations.  By keeping KJV, no royalties need to be paid to be included in "Quad" scriptures printed by the Church.  The more recent translations may be more accurately translated and can be used for personal Bible study, the KJV is the only version you will find quoted from pulpit and in church publications. If used in teaching in ward services, you will likely be invited to have a talk with the Bishop.

Over here on the other coast we've heard all the sad reports of celebrities losing their homes to the fire.  There hasn't been any reporting about non celebrities affected by the fire, so that's a good thing.

Actually there have several news stories of regular, noncelebrity families who lost homes.  Not all of Malibu are mansions.  There are many streets of regular 1950s ranch-style homes.  These homes also burned but news prefer to show celebrities.

  13. My grandparents retired to Paradise in early 1950s.  So did my Gradma's sister and husband.  They had houses on the same street about 25 houses apart.  Grandpa died within a couple of years.  But as kids, my family spent many happy visits (except for poisin oak) during summers in Paradise.  The two homes were sold in the 1980s so no relatives remained in Paradise.  I was very emotional when I saw pics of both homes totally destroyed, only some foundation and chimneys left.  More devasting are the counts of human remains found (now over 60 and notice they don't call them bodies) and the number of residents unaccounted for (1000+).  If you go to google maps you will see pre-fire pics of various streets.  Most homes are surrounded by dense trees.  Provided shade but also fuel for raging fire.  I have posted google pic of Central Park Drive, my Great Aunt's home from google, and pic of home after fire. Screenshot_20181112-092514_Maps.thumb.jpg.f8ec7fb5b6ff244178f7950ea8a14c44.jpg

  14. What about JS vision in D&C 132?  He says he saw Adam and Abraham, his Father & Mother and Brother Alvin.

This would seem to be a supernatural, spiritual vision.  Because as far as known doctrine, Alvin, his father & mother could not have been in the Celestial Kingdom with Heavenly Father and Christ yet but in the Spirit World.

This vision was a revelation of things to come and could not have been a reality at the time.

Visions in the 1800s are a prominent feature in American religious experience.  Ellen White, founder of Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA), claimed to have had over 2000 visions in her lifetime.  Other SDA leaders also described visions.  These visions were all part of the development of doctrine much the same as JS visions for LDS doctrine.

Bible and BOM contain plenty of visions (Daniel & John (Book of Revelation).

God's Universe is not bound by the physics of this world.  It would seem that dreams and visions have been a common mode of communication between His world to humans on Planet Earth.
