For safe keeping because everyone should know this:Quote
“Tell the people to be humble and faithful, and be sure to keep the spirit of the Lord and it will lead them right. Be careful and not turn away the small still voice; it will teach you what to do and where to go; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom. Tell the brethren to keep their hearts open to conviction, so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it. They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits; it will whisper peace and joy to their souls; it will take malice, hatred, strife and all evil from their hearts; and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness and build up the kingdom of God. Tell the brethren if they will follow the spirit of the Lord they will go right. Be sure to tell the people to keep the Spirit of the Lord; and if they will, they will find themselves just as they were organized by our Father in Heaven before they came into the world. Our Father in Heaven organized the human family, but they are all disorganized and in great confusion.”
Joseph then showed me the pattern, how they were in the beginning. This I cannot describe, but I saw it, and saw where the Priesthood had been taken from the earth and how it must be joined together, so that there would be a perfect chain from Father Adam to his latest posterity. Joseph again said, “Tell the people to be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and follow it, and it will lead them just right.”
Brigham Young referring to what Joseph told him, February 23, 1847:
Thank you for this quotation. It's a great reminder of the power available if I can remember to be humble, faithful and stripped of pride. Speaking for myself, my great confusion enters in when I give in to distractions such as being overly concerned about getting ahead (for what? We are already comfortable enough,) or wasting time in a multitude of ways.
We just returned from the cemetery where my wife and I visited my parents and grandmother's graves. We arrived late, shortly before the cemetery closed, after having dinner with some friends. While placing flowers on my parents' grave, our son and his family drove up, having spent the last two days down at the ocean. It was a four hour drive home. They dropped in to the cemetery on their way home to pay their respects. We were able to have a family prayer together. Five minutes before or after, and we would have missed them. I am grateful for small serendipities like that that do minister peace and joy to our souls.
The human family may be disorganized. But following the Spirit, the Lord's easy yoke will guide us to organize it. After two years searching for my Uncle Wes, we found my Aunt Jacqueline's information. Within a few days, we found Wes, his parents, family and a treasure trove of family work to be done. His parents direct line had been done, but families of siblings, their spouses and children had been left behind waiting for someone to find them and do their work.
My wife is having the same experience. The other day, I called to check in. I could tell she was a little emotional. "Are you okay," I asked. "Yes. I'm just having some great experiences seeking out my ancestors." I told her I had been having considerable joy lately with my successes. She said "I've been feeling joy also, but I think it's their joy I'm experiencing."
I believe this new program of ministering is going to take us further down the road, faster, and with more joy than the old way. It's a definite improvement. It frees us up to follow the Spirit and make sure the important things are done-- IF we don't use it as an excuse to lessen our commitment to covenants we have made.
Thanks again for your spiritual thought. I appreciate it.
