My wife and I watched all the episodes last week. It was very sad and depressing how one man destroyed a community. What I found very puzzling was that even after it came to light that Jeffs was a hypocrite and a sexual predictor, there were still people willing to follow him. I'm interested in Utah history, and over the past 20 years my wife and I have visited Colorado City several times. It was clear when Jeffs took over how the cultural of the town changed. The folks there were never very open to strangers, but they would talk to you at their store and the gas station. Under Jeffs rule, the walls and fences came up. Almost everything was behind a wall. We were always followed when we drove through the town, and when we went into a store, kids would run and people went out of their way to avoid us. We went down there last year. Things have really opened up. There is a larger school, more stores, and they even have a brewery now. It seems like there has been more of a influx of non (or ex) FLDS into the town. A lot more normal cloths and much fewer prairie dresses.

They now have a married (young) missionaries option? I feel cheated.

I'll see your pro-live violence article and raise you three anti-abortion violence articles. There is plenty of violence to go around. We are devolving as a society. We are becoming less tolerant, more mean spirited and more violent. It didn't help at all to have a president in office for four years who basically promoted bad behavior by debasing women, making fun of a handicapper reported, and constantly made derogatory remarks to people who questioned him, gave a wink and a nod to hate groups, and of course lied. https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/1998/anti-abortion-movement-marches-after-two-decades-arson-bombs-and-murder httphttps://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/anti-abortion-violence-movement-increasess://www.prochoiceamerica.org/issue/anti-abortion-violence/ https://feminist.org/anti-abortion-violence/

They are not publicly questioning church policy, so they are safe from council. It seems that storming the capital on Jan 6th or instigating an armed rebellion (Cliven Bundy) will not trigger a court of love. But if you are a sex therapist who questions the church's LQBTQ policy, or a podcaster who fact checks a GA talk, then look out.

I remember the 70 missionary book stores. They had on in Orem. I also remember the 70s selling books at church. I thought it was a great program.

I disagree. JS's polyandry, BoM translation using a rock in a hat, polygamist marriages after the manifesto, etc. were not common knowledge. And they sure didn't come up in any of my BYU religion classes.

I went through early morning seminary and graduated in t he 1970's. I also attended BYU and took the required religion classes. I don't know how things are now, but back then I was taught a very white washed and stylized version of church history. If people would have taught back then what is now in the essays, they would have faced church court. The wealth of information that is now available on the internet has change everything.

This is a good point. BYW, welcome to the forum.

Here are the translations right from church sources. Here is a quick example: "Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God." The full descriptions are in these links. https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/abr/fac-2?lang=eng&adobe_mc_ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.churchofjesuschrist.org%2Fstudy%2Fscriptures%2Fpgp%2Fabr%2Ffac-2%3Flang%3Deng&adobe_mc_sdid=SDID%3D0384F7D69693E47C-6B4D61A2748C5101|MCORGID%3D66C5485451E56AAE0A490D45%40AdobeOrg|TS%3D1653022285 https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/the-pearl-of-great-price-student-manual-2018/the-book-of-abraham/facsimiles-2-3-abraham-4-5?lang=eng&adobe_mc_ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.churchofjesuschrist.org%2Fstudy%2Fmanual%2Fthe-pearl-of-great-price-student-manual-2018%2Fthe-book-of-abraham%2Ffacsimiles-2-3-abraham-4-5%3Flang%3Deng&adobe_mc_sdid=SDID%3D0019AC686F728043-4ACD32ADA6536CF8|MCORGID%3D66C5485451E56AAE0A490D45%40AdobeOrg|TS%3D1653022319 Now, compare JS's version to what here what Egyptologist say the facsimiles are: Arthur Cruttenden Mace, Assistant Curator in the Department of Egyptian Art in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is not even close. It was not a translation. No kolob, no Abraham. Just a common second century funeral document.
-
We have the facimiles and we have Joseph Smith's detailed "translation" of them. You don't have to have the complete detailed record to determine that the translation is way wrong, made up wrong. Apologist seem to want to skip over that inconvenient fact. So what is the spin on this one? JS blew the translation of all the papyrus that we have, but all the rest (the stuff we don't have) he translated correctly? It wasn't written by the hand of Abraham. It is a 2nd century Egyptian funeral text.

No it is not. Jan. 6 was an unlawful insurrection to try and stop the certification of a lawful election.

I was a heavy diet dr. pepper drinker for years. I use to drink two 44 oz glasses per day, and sometimes more. I finally switched to tea. I like a Cinnamon blend from Harney and Sons. I drink one to two cups in the morning and that's it. It was enough for me to cut out all soft drinks without any problem. I feel much more healthy now. -

As a kid, I do remember people, including my mother, using their temple recommend as a form of ID when paying for something with a check.
