  1. Did anyone here know Eugene England? Anyone have any knowledge/feelings about him?

He was my prof in 1979. An Institute director I talked to in the early 1990's said that he had fallen out of favor in the church educational system because of how he challenged impressionable undergraduate minds to deal with uncomfortable questions.

  2. This seems an odd scenario. Do you have a real life example?

The very specific example I had in mind was the sons of Saddam Hussein.

I don't have a concrete reference for this now but years ago when they were in the news I seem to remember hearing that he forced them into a life of killing and torture very early.

p.s., thanks to everyone for the scriptural references! I should have known that but I'm rusty.

  3. Where does the idea that one won't be tempted beyond what one can bear come from? Is that a Biblical teaching? Or?

My alternate/original title for this thread was going to be something about children who murder. I was thinking about the children of brutal men who raise their children to kill. And wondering when if ever the responsibility becomes the child's and not the parent's.

If your parent is a killer and raises you in mortal terror and orders you to kill .... If disobeying would likely result in your death even if you had enough sense of right and wrong after that corruption to want to step outside your training ....

Are questions about extreme examples like this frowned upon?

  4. Thanks for the response and for the article from Nelson.

But if a baby is miscarried or dies in the womb a day before it would have been born, what happens to the spirit which would have occupied that body?

Such a spirit isn't counted among one's family members, is it?

It will still have to come back for another body? Or not? ... or is this not known ?

  5. Do Mormons consider abortion to be murder?

The last I heard the answer was no. If I recall correctly. (It was many years ago.)

Yes, it's a profoundly bad thing when done electively, but not murder per se.

Because murder prematurely terminates the spiritual quest of someone. Their spirit moves on. And they're done.

But when a fetus is aborted, whichever spirit is or would be occupying that body will still have another chance to have a body. So life hasn't been permanently taken from that spirit. So it's not murder.

Is this roughly correct by current church teaching?

    Thank you.

  6. I'm afraid my favorite elephant joke might not fly here, so I'll skip to .....

Why do ducks have flat feet?

    To stomp out forest fires.

Why do elephants have flat feet?

    To stomp out flaming ducks.

  7. Does every forum have a designated person to drop by and tell newbies they smell?

For some reason I thought this forum might be different.

But I've always been on the naive side.

  8. How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?

Whereas the party of the first part, also known as "Lawyer," and the party of the second part, also known as "Light Bulb," do hereby and forthwith agree to a transaction wherein the party of the second part (Light Bulb) shall be removed from the current position as a result of failure to perform previously agreed upon duties, i.e. the lighting, elucidation, and otherwise illumination of the area ranging from the front (north) door, through the entryway, terminating at an area just inside the primary living area, demarcated by the beginning of the carpet, any spillover illumination being at the option of the party of the second part (Light Bulb) and not required by the aforementioned agreement between the parties.

The aforementioned removal transaction shall include, but not be limited to, the following steps:

The party of the first part (Lawyer) shall, with or without elevation at his option, by means of a chair, stepstool, ladder or any other means of elevation, grasp the party of the second part (Light Bulb) and rotate the party of the second part (Light Bulb) in a counter-clockwise direction, this point being non-negotiable.
Upon reaching a point where the party of the second part (Light Bulb) becomes separated from the party of the third part ("Receptacle"), the party of the first part (Lawyer) shall have the option of disposing of the party of the second part (Light Bulb) in a manner consistent with all applicable state, local and federal statutes.
Once separation and disposal have been achieved, the party of the first part (Lawyer) shall have the option of beginning installation of the party of the fourth part ("New Light Bulb"). This installation shall occur in a manner consistent with the reverse of the procedures described in step one of this self-same document, being careful to note that the rotation should occur in a clockwise direction, this point also being non-negotiable.

Note: The above described steps may be performed, at the option of the party of the first part (Lawyer), by any or all persons authorized by him, the objective being to produce the most possible revenue for the party of the fifth part, also known as "Partnership."
