Duncan
Elder Hartman Rector Jr. passed away, he was 94 but he served as a 70 from 1968 to 1994. He was electrifying to listen to. He came to this Stake several times I remember. My Mom LOVED him, she had all his books, tapes and could listen to him for hours she said. In 1993 he toured this mission and the RS were doing the food for the Zone Conference and the elders were helping my Mum and older sister in the kitchen but they weren't really helping. After the conference Elder Rector came into the kitchen and offered the elders help, to which older sister, yelled at him and kicked him out of the kitchen. Mum found out later and when she did sparks flew that day let me tell you! 3 Link to comment
mnn727
Too Bad.... he was the very first G.A. I saw speak in person (at a Stake Conference) about 6 months after I converted. His entire talk I felt the Spirit so much it was the most amazing thing. Edited November 7, 2018 by mnn727 1 Link to comment

He was one of the best speakers among the brethren I think! 1 Link to comment
Kenngo1969
I remember once when President Hinckley was conducting a session of General Conference, after Elder Rector spoke, President Hinckley got up and said, "We've just heard from Elder Hartman Rector Jr. Elder Rector is from Moberly, Missouri, and that's the way they talk down there." Although he had presided over the mission several presidents previous to the two that I served under, Elder Rector was still a legend in the California-San Diego mission even several years after he presided there. While I don't want to cast aspersions on him, while I join others here in their fondness for him, and while I don't think he was in it just for the numbers, I know that some questioned some of Elder Rector's purported methods as a mission president. I think, though, that his heart was definitely in the right place, and he wouldn't want anyone to be baptized who wasn't truly converted. (I had a ward mission leader question whether I was in it for the numbers, and there aren't many ways to raise my hackles more than questioning my integrity ...) RIP, Elder Rector. (Of course, in the version of the afterlife taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there won't be much "R"-IP-ing going on: It will be more like "W"-IP: Work in Peace. (Of course, if you like what you're doing, and I suppose all of us will like what we end up doing there, it doesn't seem like work. ) Link to comment
