That's interesting. I recall that several years ago the church requested that news organizations use the full name in first references, but that didn't seem to go anywhere.

Reading through the updated style guide, I doubt these suggestions will be adopted by any outside organizations. "Mormon" and "Mormonism" have always been useful shorthand references to the church and its members, and that's unlikely to change. I also can't see any outside organizations using "The Church of Jesus Christ" or "restored Church of Jesus Christ" as "shortened reference," as such references are not associated with the church among anyone but members. 

I would guess that church publications will follow the style guide, as will church-owned publishers like the Deseret News and Deseret Book, and other church-related independent publishers and companies. But I don't see it gaining traction in the broader publishing world.

Just my two cents as a writer and editor.
