We're Baaacckkk! -- Next Ow Action

Recommended Posts

Reminds me of a parable:

There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:  And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.  And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;  Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

... i know i know i know... I'm not accusing the brethren of not fearing god.  Just a joke.

Good news, bad news!

OW will NOT be assembling en masse at Temple Square to try to gain admittance to the priesthood session.  Instead, OW members will be attending their local priesthood sessions at stake centers across the world.

Damn, I love these women!

They sure are persistent, I have to give them that.  I hope they enjoy listening to/watching conference.

Perhaps one day they'll see their error.

If I ran PR for the church (which I don't), I would recommend that local leaders do nothing in stopping them enter and sitting wherever they want.  If the are protesting or loud, then escort them out like you would anyone... but do NOTHING else.  They'll lose interest if it's not actually causing a scene.  I mean there's a lot of other things someone can do on a Saturday night.

Yep.  I do not see a reason for anyone to make an issue of their attendance. It can be viewed live online, so there is no reason to exclude anyone from attending. Also, usually several rooms in a Church building have audio and/video during feeds during Conference.

And I agree that the widow and Judge is applicialbe, with the same disclaimer you gave. I believe they will keep petitioning "the judge" hoping he will give in eventually.

Those women are just replacing those of us who don't attend the priesthood session anymore. ;)

We used to fill up the cultural hall during Priesthood Sessions.  The first time the session was streamed online we didn't even fill up the chapel.

So I guess the real question is what will the OW do if they show up and it's only them and a few other men?  Will they stay and watch the whole two hour session, or leave?

Yep. No reason to stop anyone from attending. Why would we? We've had women occassionally at local broadcasts. Big deal.

Frankly, the church lost the moral high ground by restricting them access to the meeting. Regardless of whether or not you think women should have the priesthood or whether or not some day they will, restricting attendance at a general meeting just stinks. I doubt a man would be refused access to the women's conference.

But it isn't a general meeting, it's a general priesthood meeting.

We need to remember that Priesthood is not the men. Also, it is the pure intent of the heart for being there and for doing the Lord’s will with what is learned within one’s stewardship that counts. While that is a personal matter, it could be subject to others' scrutiny.

The Church's policy on who gets tickets and admittance to the SLC venue(s) has nothing to do with Priesthood being the men or anyone's pure intent to attend, but with the intersection of logistics, a practical assessment of the intended audience and a potentially limited resource.

it might be a general priesthood meeting, but you don't have to have the priesthood to attend. 11 year old boys  can come. non member males can come. The argument for that is "they may one day hold the priesthood." well, so might the women. what is the argument for keeping them out of the in person session?

You seem to view these women as courageous. Maybe someone should send them a memo that they now can watch it at home. So bold.

The moral high ground? They lost nothing by restricting access. News flash, they can now watch it from home anyway.

Frankly I'm surprised they didn't do this a long time ago.  They'll attend it for a few years or a handful of sessions and realize that its just easier to watch it at home like the rest of those who actually hold the priesthood. lol

If they wanted to go and be instructed that would seem fine.  But OW's reason for attendance is to further it's own agenda.  That seems out of harmony with the Spirit.

Why would they actually watch it? That is not why they are going (or saying they are going, their numbers in reality have been less than their PR states). If their true interest was in the messages at the session, they could watch it from home. I didn't grow up in the church, but I have always checked out the priesthood sessions once they were available online, and then watched it live when I had the chance.

I know some will boo me, but I have no issues with men-only or women-only gatherings. Yep, even in the church.

Similar circumstances here. Since it has been televised (BYUTV) I have watched at home and one of my neighbors comes over to watch. I wasn't at the stake center in April, but I heard there were less than 10 guys there. My wife also watched - well more like listened - last time, no biggie. Am I supposed to kick her out of the house or lock myself and our son in the bedroom to watch? So, it doesn't seem like women going to a stake center will have much of an impact - maybe they should have done that before the church started broadcasting, then it might have been noticed. FWIW, I do agree with the comment about some local leaders "taking the bull (cow?) by the horns" and making a spectacle of it - I wouldn't be surprised at some church discipline coming for some women who decide to partake.

The problem was that OW stated prior to their application that accepting the application would mean recognizing women as "potential elders" (IIRC that is a direct quote) meaning they would have publicized acceptance of them attending as acceptance of them holding the Priesthood eventually.

At which point it then becomes 'well, why haven't they gotten a revelation letting women in yet if it is going to happen eventually'?

The church has made great strides in recent years in fully utilizing the talents and abilities of all it's members.  The contributions of women are being recognized to a greater degree and the vital importance of women in moving the church towards Zion has been acknowledged at the highest levels.  The importance of women in ward councils has been taught over and over again the past few years.

While the church has been taking important steps in bringing men and women together I see this action as having the potential to widen a divide that was in the process of closing.  While the church is not perfect in this regard and hindsight is always 20/20, OW's actions seem way out of line with the Spirit that the gospel should bring into our meetings, homes, and personal lives.

Has any woman ever been kicked out of a streamed session in church buildings?

This is what they should have done first. Doing it now when everyone can watch at home carries very little punch.  Unless they watch all of conference in the church building, it will just come off as a weak protest.

I've never heard of anyone being kicked out.

Having women in the congregation, who are there in support of OW, changes the tone of the meeting.  Instead of focusing on the messages being delivered many will focus on the gender of the audience.

Priesthood session has been an important event for myself and my boys in the past.  Hopefully the General Women's Meeting will be the same for my wife and my daughters.  Using these sacred events as a forum to push an agenda is unfortunate and I believe entirely inappropriate.
