The Other "meet The Mormons"

Recommended Posts

Two or three months ago, this documentary was shown in the UK. I can't remember if it was discussed here or not.

I wonder if this was intended to be part of the larger project. I thought it was a unique look at the tedium and loneliness of missionary life. It also portrayed young adult Mormonism as not very fun.

It also is very "dark" in it's lighting/music and general overtone.

People that have watched it who are not members have used words like "sinister/dark" to desribe it's portrayal of church. Thankfully most of my friends also realise it was made by Channel 4 who in the UK are known for their anti religion bias and lax "documentaries" .

Our missionaries watched it and were really upset as so many untruths are in it and it also I feel deliberately tries to manipulate the missionary.

It's clear from the first 2 minutes it'll be a hatchet job on the church and unfortunately it is. However because it is so overt in this, everyone I know that has watched it has seen straight through it!

To some interested non member friends I've recommended they watch The District for a much better look at missionary life as that also importantly looks at the lives of investigators too - something this documentary totally ignored.

The selection of the title is unfortunate -- and perhaps not unintentional.

Confusion with the soon-to-be released motion picture is inevitable.

And, as I mentioned on the other thread, the Church used this title first, for the movie it produced back in the '60s.

I know there was a book by this title out there even before that. It may even have been British. I have only seen copies in Britain.
