World Meeting Of Families & Pope Francis 2015

Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles Chaput confirmed that Pope Francis will be attending the World Meeting of Families, which is slated to take place in Philadelphia from Sept 22-27, 2015 (http://www.worldmeeting2015.org/ ).

 

The theme of this triennial global event is "Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive"

My question is:  Will non-Catholics be participating?  Say, for example, LDS gentry?  Of course, our temple there will not be completed until 2016.

No, I think that day the LDS gentry will be having a herbal tea at the high tea hour, which simply cannot be missed. Then afterward the gentry have a ball followed by a green Jell-O tasting.  These events just have to be announced much earlier to be put on the busy calendar.  It is just too difficult to purchase just the ideal white shirt and blue pin strip suit and proper dress for the spouse.

The Church has seldom participated in ecclesiastical activities except for feeling the poor and social events. In 2008 a few apostles visited a papal prayer service in New York. I expect we will see more of these type of events, but I have not been tracking them.

Includes at the bottom a number of interfaith events we've participated in. Musical events, awards ceremonies, meetings with other faith leaders, humanitarian projects, etc.

This is a Catholic effort, attended by others.  I won't be surprised if the church contributes to the diocese in some way for it.   I won't be surprised if BYU professors attend and/or present, and the RS/YW presidencies, at least the workshops .   But I doubt LDS church leaders would have any need to do so.

It might be nice if the LDS Church could send an apostolic delegation, and that the Pope in turn send a legate to the LDS convocation on families in October of that year -- including the Most Reverend John C. Wester, Archbishop of Salt Lake City.  I do know that several of the Brethren (including President Hinckley, who spoke at the 100th anniversary celebration there) have attended services at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in SLC.

I believe the Pope is a good man. However the Great Commission by Christ was/is to go forth and preach the Gospel to every living creature.
