Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles Chaput confirmed that Pope Francis will be attending the World Meeting of Families, which is slated to take place in Philadelphia from Sept 22-27, 2015 (http://www.worldmeeting2015.org/ ).

The theme of this triennial global event is "Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive"

See Victoria Johnson , Laura Dimon , Larry Mcshane , Carol Kuruvilla, “Pope Francis will reportedly attend Philly event next year; Mayor de Blasio and New Yorkers hoping for Big Apple visit,” New York Daily News, July 25, 2014, online at http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/pope-francis-coming-america-article-1.1879894 .

My question is:  Will non-Catholics be participating?  Say, for example, LDS gentry?  Of course, our temple there will not be completed until 2016.

No, I think that day the LDS gentry will be having a herbal tea at the high tea hour, which simply cannot be missed. Then afterward the gentry have a ball followed by a green Jell-O tasting.  These events just have to be announced much earlier to be put on the busy calendar.  It is just too difficult to purchase just the ideal white shirt and blue pin strip suit and proper dress for the spouse.

Hee hee, this made me laugh ;)

Isn't there a Mormon cultural bias against interreligious stuff?

Misrere, I was just reacting to the term gentry being used.

The Church has seldom participated in ecclesiastical activities except for feeling the poor and social events. In 2008 a few apostles visited a papal prayer service in New York. I expect we will see more of these type of events, but I have not been tracking them.

I hope we won't be "feeling" the poor. ;)

Well you know us Mormons, we don't just feed people we love bomb'em into the Church; all touchy-feely stuff.

Make me LOL when I saw the error. I wish I could blame it on my spell check, but I cannot.  It is just me.  I bet you are one of those going to the tea party, aren't you!?!

This is a Catholic effort, attended by others.  I won't be surprised if the church contributes to the diocese in some way for it.   I won't be surprised if BYU professors attend and/or present, and the RS/YW presidencies, at least the workshops .   But I doubt LDS church leaders would have any need to do so.

There is one tea party I enjoyed. The one in "Alice in Wonderland". :)

"Our goal is to exclude no one from the excitement of this meeting.  Our goal is to offer the beauty of Catholic teaching about marriage and the family with confidence and a spirit of invitation to every person of good will. That's the heart of our theme:  "Love is our mission; the family fully alive."  Just as St. Irenaeus taught that "the glory of God is man fully alive," so too the glory of men and women is their capacity to love as God loves.  And nowhere is that love more powerfully modeled than in a faithful, natural family of mother, father and children.  We want to show that truth persuasively to the world."

"In September next year, families from around the globe will gather in Philadelphia for the Eighth World Meeting of Families. We have strong hopes that our wonderful Pope Francis will join us. And we're confident that the Spirit of God and his transforming joy will bless everyone who takes part. This is a moment of grace not just for Catholics, but for the whole Philadelphia region and people of good will across the wider community; an opportunity for renewal that comes once in a lifetime. All will be welcome. So please keep this gathering in your daily prayers. And please, please, urge others to join us here in the City of Brotherly Love in 2015!"

It seems as if, while this is a Catholic event, all are welcome.

My heck, I thought you were opting for "feeling" their pain, Bill Clinton style.   :acute:

Amen, Brother.

It might be nice if the LDS Church could send an apostolic delegation, and that the Pope in turn send a legate to the LDS convocation on families in October of that year -- including the Most Reverend John C. Wester, Archbishop of Salt Lake City.  I do know that several of the Brethren (including President Hinckley, who spoke at the 100th anniversary celebration there) have attended services at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in SLC.

In latest interview, Pope Francis reveals top 10 secrets to happiness:

9. Don't proselytize; respect others' beliefs. "We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: 'I am talking with you in order to persuade you,' No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing," the pope said.

I didn't know the Pope was so against this one....

I believe the Pope is a good man. However the Great Commission by Christ was/is to go forth and preach the Gospel to every living creature.

Catholics tend to make a distinction between evangelizing and proselytizing.  This blog article helps to understand what Pope Francis meant in this context of Catholic belief (apparently he has made his disdain known before):

Edit: This one is also helpful in elucidating the technical distinction, within Catholicism, between evangelization and proselytization:
