Sunstone Kirtland new dates: April 26-28, 2013

We’re thrilled to announce we are returning to Kirtland for another regional conference!

Sunstone has joined forces with the local Mormons in the Midwest group to co-plan this conference focused on the theme, “Mormons in the Middle,” a nod to both Midwest geography and the position Mormons outside the Intermountain West often find themselves in.

The schedule will include:

A Friday evening keynote speaker and potluck

Saturday morning concurrent sessions/panels

Kirtland Temple tours

Saturday afternoon workshops featuring Natasha Helfer Parker and Jennifer Finlayson Fife

Saturday evening keynotes in the Kirtland Temple featuring Kevin Kloosterman, Bill Reel, and local Kirtland historian Karl Ricks Anderson

Sunday morning services at local congregations (to be announced) and additional Kirtland Temple tours

We will be posting a more complete Kirtland schedule and registration information soon!

I want to go, and tie it into a trip to Nauvoo with my husband. Can't wait to see the agenda with times and dates!

Checking flights, figuring out places to go, the temps there at this time, and then present it to my husband. Hopefully, we'll make it and I'll for sure say "hi". Sounds like there will be some great speakers.

Buzz me if you end up going. I'll give you advice on what else to do - church-wise and not. We know of Kirtland because of our history. But for most everyone else in Ohio, Kirtland is known for two things: a state championship high school football program and an annual wine-fest (yes, the irony).

I imagine they mean the missionary position position of being a small misunderstood minority.

I'm trying to make a case for the trip in order to get my husband to want to travel there. Here's one, Nauvoo, Illinois is on a list of places you want to visit before you die, who'd a thunk it? But even though it's a 10 or so hour drive, I'd like to get over to the conference and see Amish country. Is there anything in between Nauvoo and Kirtland that would be interesting? I mentioned something in Chicago, and my husband sort of poo-poo'd the idea. But maybe a nice golf course will do the trick! Thanks Buckeye.

Golf's not my thing, but I could get you recommendations. There are plenty of good courses in Ohio, including one almost in my backyard, but the weather is always iffy in April. For church sites, you should budget at least 2-3 days for Nauvoo and 1/2 day for Kirtland. If you have them time, there are many other historical sites to visit around Kirtland - John Johnson farm, Fairport harbor, etc, the temple quarry, etc., but Kirtland itself will not take much more than 1/2 a day. Amish country is centered around Holmes county - about 1.5 hours south of Kirtland. Between Nauvoo and Kirtland, Chicago has the most to offer by far. Just depends on what you're looking for. I went to grad school in Chicago and could give you pointers. Too bad Cedar Point doesn't open until May 11.

away from concentrated LDS populations. What they deal with is different

From the title I thought this was a conference for Mormons who are finding themselves in the "middle" of full belief and just plain leaving.

If that's not what this is, then someone should totally do something like that. There's probably a big need for such gatherings, and what could go wrong?

That was pretty much my impression -- that it was a double entendre implying the location in the Midwest and being midway between belief and rejection. Hence my question about what it has to do with geography.

I thought this too. I was even more convinced when I saw that Kevin Kloosterman was involved. But maybe I'm wrong?

The Mormon Sisters found me in Kirtland. Ohio. It will always be a special place for me.

This does include a segment of them. It has been expressed that this conference is for any LDS who find themselves in the middle

Midwest, middle of the mormon moment, middle way, middle of a faith crisis, ect....

I plan to discuss faith crisis and Grace in ways that leave others hopeful and reaching for faith in the restored gospel. So I am reaching out to that segment

How will these be different than the Mormon Stories conferences that Kloosterman was involved with? Just curious. Thanks!

So a conference for the Malcolm in all of us? "We will now begin with an opening hymn, 'You're not the boss of me now'."

To give such an analysis we would need to know what the MS conferences with Kloosterman were like.

Pointing people back to the church rather then pointing them away

If you search "Kevin Kloosterman, Mormon Stories", you'll see his involvement. I know he was a part of at least one podcast, spoke at conferences and I believe helped organize others.

That's funny. LOL
