Jesus Actor To Appear In The Manti Pageant For The First Time

According to the web site at lds.org, "For the first time, the pageant will portray the resurrected Christ visiting the Nephites

in ancient America".

Since they haven't used a Jesus actor from the time the pageant started 1967, why start now? And will the appearance

be in a vague geographical location (or like a Yucatan Peninsula setting)?

Thanks,

Jim

It will appear in a vague geographical setting most likely. The Church takes no official position on Book of Mormon geography.

I'm surprised to hear this is the first year they are doing it.

The last time I attended the pageant was over 10 years ago, I think. At that time, they presented the scene with the live depiction of Christ's appearance after the pageant was over. It was explained to the audience that the scene was being tried out, as it were, for addition to the pageant in future years' productions.

Again, I'm surprised to hear it has taken them this long to finally put it in.

As for why it wasn't done up to now, I can only surmise they were reticent about depicting such a sacred scene unless and until it could be done right.

They desperately need to revamp the pageant. Well, parts. When I last saw it about four or five years ago, they had just put in some new scenes and modified a few others. Those were spectacular, moving, and beautiful. But the majority was pretty much the narration, music, and style from the 1960s/1970s. Music meant to be moving and epic back then sounds dark and ominous now, which makes some of the most important scenes seem... well.. dark and ominous.

Now, when I saw it five years ago, I seem to recall that Christ was portrayed then too. Maybe it was just a light? I don't think so though. It was a great scene.

Which explains the wigwams and teepees at 2:20 in

I am virtually positive that the Palmyra program portrays Christ in a Mesoamerican setting and uses an actor, at least that is my recollection.

edit: No, actually I am positive- check out the slide show

Yes, the Hill Cumorah Pageant, I understand, has always featured a live depiction of Christ's visit to the Nephites. In the past, the Manti script has had something along these lines: "The greatest event in the book we do not show you," and then it describes the visit of Christ.

I can't say why the Church has felt it could be done in New York but not in Manti. Probably has to do with individual creators in far-flung locales. I think both productions kind of emerged spontaneously as local efforts before being taken under the wing of general Church administration.

Thats not true! Manti HAS done it before, I SAW it! They showed an actor as Christ...coming down from the sky ( (looked like he was walking down some invisible stairs) to the ground where the Nephites awaited Him. it was portrayed quite nicely and was an emotional scene! This was in the late 1990's I think.

This is obviously a prime example of the LDS Church covering up its history. More proof of our villainous, or at least disingenuous, ways!

Scott, I know that when you said you were surprised, you really mean that you feel you have been or are being lied to. We all feel your pain. Fortunately, there are places you can turn to for the unadultured truth, such as the RfM boards. You can come out the other side stronger!

GingerRed, I am afraid you just imagined yours. Memories like that are delusions of the religious mind.

Re-reading the article though, it is apparent the article says nothing about it being the first time. The "Article Highlight" sidebar, which may have been done by someone else, is what says it. Probably a mis-reading of the actual news release from someone who hasn't seen it.

Mathew, mufkowski, Ginger Red;

I was going to say the same thing. That when i watched the Pageant some years ago I could have sworn that there was an actor for Jesus. In fact, we went as a young adult group and we stayed at the house of the aunt and uncle of a memeber in our group and their kids worked in the pageant and talked about one time the actor for Jesus was kidnapped. I think as a prank of some sort on the pageant. I don't know the details for sue but i do remember those kids having a cool iguana as a pet.

They should really just ask Jesus to come personally so they can have the scene be more authentic.

Perhas you can send him a telegram or something. ;)

The sidebar is probably just boilerplate that they haven't gotten around to updating in the past several years.

Shhhhhhhh

Don't tell anyone.

There's actually no actors in any of these

The Boss just didn't ever want to go to Manti before because....

well, you know.....

I guess maybe I shouldn't mention that I dated one of these actors... (I guarantee--he was NOT the real thing!)

I just watched an interesting episode of the TV version of "This American Life". It was the story of an LDS artist in Utah who only uses men with real beards as his models for New Testament paintings. The problem is that the only people he can find with good old-school beards are homeless people and others on the fringe of society.

The guy he finds for Jesus has a lapsed-Mormon girlfriend who must now deal with dating "Jesus." :help:

That was just the story he told you. He was sworn to secrecy. Have you noticed that they always have the "actor" at quite a distance- so that you cannot really see "his" facial features well?
