Does anyone know if there is a copy of this letter online?  It is often referred to on both sides of the debate.  I would love to read the whole thing.  The closest I've come is this reference in Gee's review of "by his own hand.."

Klaus Baer, letter to Hugh Nibley, 10 August 1968 in the Archives of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago.

Is this letter online to anyone's knowledge?

I would ask Chris Smith.

I unfortunately don't have a copy of this particular letter. It's possible there'd be a copy in the Nibley papers, but they aren't yet indexed, so it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. The best way to get a copy would likely be to write to whoever curates the Oriental Institute's archives and ask them to send you a copy. Probably they'll ask you to pay a small fee for copying and mailing expenses. My curiosity is now sufficiently piqued that I may do it myself.

For what Baer thought of the good Dr's work see Chris's Blog.

Is it direct quoting or a paraphrase of Baer's "thought"?

When you climb up a ladder, you...begin at the bottom...ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top...so it is with the principles of the Gospel--you must begin with the first...go on until you learn all the principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have passed through the veil before you will have learned them. It is not all to be comprehended in this world. Joseph Smith

The letters Noel is referring to are here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

The somewhat unsympathetic tone of these letters toward Nibley is one reason the OP piqued my interest. The 1968 letter, at least as quoted by Gee, seems to adopt a more positive and admiring tone. Perhaps Baer's view of Nibley changed between '68 and '72, or perhaps Baer was just tailoring his message to the audience in each case.
